After the teams combined for 61 runs in the first two games of the series, senior Mike Goemans threw a one-hit, complete-game shutout, retiring the final 19 Manhattan batters in the final game of the weekend, as the Golden Griffins completed the three-game sweep on Sunday. Canisius won 10-8 and 4-0 on Senior Day at the Demske Sports Complex, improving to 34-16 overall and 16-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

The Golden Griffins clinched their fourth consecutive berth in the MAAC Championship (May 26-30) and need one win next weekend at Marist to clinch the regular-season MAAC title for the second time in three seasons.

Steve McQuail was 5-for-7 with a home run and three RBI on the day, hitting a two-run homer in the first game to give the junior a home run in five straight games. Junior Brian Burton was 2-for-5 with a walk, a home run and four RBI while junior Sean Jamieson had three hits in the first game.

In the second game, Goemans allowed a one-out single to Austin Sheffield in the second, and allowed a walk and hit a batter in the third before retiring the final 19 batters to pick up the win. It was the fourth complete game of the season for Goemans who improved to 5-3 on the season and lowered his ERA to 4.36 - the lowest among the Canisius starting pitchers. It was the first nine-inning one-hitter by a Canisius pitcher since Mike Bax against Saint Peter's on April 9, 2005.

The Griffs scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before adding an insurance run in the eighth. In the fourth, senior Ian Choy was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single from McQuail and scored on a wild pitch to score the game's first run. Paul Panik led off the second with a double and scored on a two-out RBI single from Perry Silverman. The Griffs made it 3-0 in the sixth when McQuail doubled down the left-field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Burton. The Griffs scored in the eighth when Choy led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Burton and scored on an RBI groundout from Panik.

After the third inning, Goemans went to three balls on just four of the final 18 batters and got some great defensive plays in the game. Sophomore Drew Pettit made a diving grab to stop a grounder, got up and retired Chad Salem in the fourth. Silverman leapt against the center-field bullpen in the seventh to take away a home run from Sheffield.

In the opener, Manhattan (25-16, 10-8 MAAC) scored twice in the first off Canisius starter Shane Davis, but the redshirt junior retired the final two batters to prevent the big inning. The Griffs sent 10 batters to the plate in the first against Manhattan starter Tom Costigan, with McQuail, Burton and Willson each recording RBI singles. Sophomore Brad Medici had a sacrifice fly and junior Will Chomicki had a two-RBI triple to center to give Canisius the 6-2 lead.

After Jamieson led off the second with a triple, Burton went opposite field to hit his 14^th homer of the season and give Canisus an 8-2 lead. Kevin Nieto hit a three-run homer to left in the fourth to cut the Canisius lead in half, making the score 8-5. 

Canisius pushed the lead to five runs in the fifth on a two-run homer from McQuail to left, going up 10-5. The Jaspers added three unearned runs in the seventh, but Davis got Kyle Murphy to strike out to end the game.
Davis allowed eight runs, five earned, and nine hits while striking out six to improve to 7-3 on the season.

Canisius concludes its regular season with six consecutive road games, starting next weekend with a three-game series at Marist. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.

Game Notes: In between games, the Golden Griffins honored the nine members in the Class of 2010 - Chris Cox, Choy, Davis, Mike Deuschle, Goemans, Panik, Silverman, Andrew Van'tWout and Willson. The seniors have won 131 games, 16 more than any other class... Canisius swept Manhattan in a three-game series for the first time in program history... Silverman's streak of consecutive games with a run scored ended at 22 games after the senior didn't score in the second game of the day... Canisius improves to 36-9 in its last 45 MAAC home games... Davis is now 17-2 in 22 regular-season MAAC starts... Willson's career-long 13-game hitting streak came to an end in the second game... Willson made a head-high catch while falling over the right-field fence to take away a home run in the first game... The four runs scored by Canisius are the fewest scored by the Griffs in a nine-inning game since a 5-4 loss at Delaware on April 3... Canisius is the first team to shut out Manhattan in 2010... Choy was hit by a pitch in each game and has recorded an HBP in five of the last six games, giving him 22 on the season... The 14 home wins are the second-most in program history, ranking behind the 15 wins from the 1994 season.
