Combining
for 44 runs scored and 41 hits (including eight home runs), to go along with
seven runs allowed in 16 innings pitched, the Canisius College baseball team
continued its perfect start to conference play with a 22-5 and 22-2
doubleheader sweep at Saint Peter's on Saturday. The Golden Griffins improve to
21-11 and 5-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Canisius
has won five straight and 10 of its last 13 games. Canisius tops the 20-win
plateau for the sixth time in program history, with four of those seasons
coming in the past four years.
Junior Brian
Burton reached base in all 10 of his plate appearances on the day, going
7-for-7 with five runs scored, three home runs and nine RBI. Junior Sean Jamieson was 3-for-6 with five
runs scored, three walks, two home runs and nine RBI, including a
program-record eight RBI in the first game. Junior Steve McQuail was 4-for-5 with seven runs scored, two home runs and
seven RBI. Senior Paul Panik was
3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI in game two. On the day, Fifteen
Golden Griffins got a hit, 14 scored a run and 13 had at least one RBI.
Redshirt junior Shane Davis allowed four runs in his 6.1 innings of work to improve
to 5-2 on the season and win for the fourth time in his last five starts.
Senior Chris Cox allowed two runs
and struck out nine in his six innings pitched for his second win of the
campaign.
The Griffs scored two runs in the first inning
of each game. In the opener, Burton had a two-RBI double to give Canisius the
early 2-0 lead. The Griffs then broke open the game with an eight-run fourth
and nine-run fifth inning. Burton led off the fourth with a homer, putting
Canisius up 3-1. Sophomore Brad Medici
had an RBI triple and junior Will
Chomicki had an RBI single. After senior Perry Silverman was hit by a pitch, Jamieson followed with a
three-run homer, with senior Ian Choy
going back-to-back to put Canisius up 9-1. Sophomore Drew Pettit added an RBI single to cap the scoring in the fourth.
Canisius loaded the bases to start the fifth,
with McQuail's two-RBI single starting the nine-run frame. Burton then had a three-run
homer to right to clear the bases. Canisius loaded the bases for the second
time in the inning - with Medici singling and Chomicki and redshirt freshman Jarred Flock walking. Jamieson then hit a grand slam to make the score 19-2.
Jamieson had an RBI single in the sixth, Choy
had an RBI single in the eighth and Kevin
Whitehead had a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring.
Davis allowed one run in his first six innings
of work before running into trouble in the seventh when Saint Peter's (8-19,
2-6 MAAC) scored three runs. Freshmen
Scott Whitehead and Jordan Cave yielded one run in 2.2 innings of relief.
McQuail had a two-run homer in the first inning
of game two to give Canisius the early lead again. The Griffs wasted no time in
breaking the game open - scoring eight (six unearned) in the second and five in
the third. Jamieson drew a bases-loaded walk, Choy had a two-RBI single,
McQuail had a sacrifice fly, senior Shayne
Willson had an RBI single, Panik had a two-RBI double and freshman Josh Lewyckyj had an RBI single to
round out the second.
In the third, three of the first four Canisius
batters walked to load the bases. Burton had a two-RBI single and freshman Aaron Barley walked to re-load the
bases. Panik brought home McQuail with a sacrifice fly, Lewyckyj had another
RBI single and Barley would score on a Saint Peter's error - one of five in the
second game for the Peacocks.
Canisius added three runs in the fourth when
McQuail (two-run) and Burton went back-to-back with homers. In the sixth, Barley
had an RBI double, Lewyckyj had his third RBI single of the game and senior Mike Deuschle had an RBI single.
Cox allowed single runs in the second and
fourth innings, recording two strikeouts in each of his final three innings of
work. Freshman Matt Thomas closed out the game with a scoreless seventh.
Canisius
and Saint Peter's wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch set
for 12 p.m.

has now won 11 of the last 12 between the schools, including five straight in
Jersey City... McQuail extended his career-long hitting streak to 13 games...
Burton had two home runs for the second time in five games and third time this
season. Burton also has 16 RBI in the last five games... Cave hasn't allowed a
run in his last four appearances... The nine strikeouts for Cox are a career
high... Davis has allowed 11 walks in his last 46.2 innings pitched (2.12 per
