Baseball Scores 44 Runs in Doubleheader at Saint Peter?s

Combining for 44 runs scored and 41 hits (including eight home runs), to go along with seven runs allowed in 16 innings pitched, the Canisius College baseball team continued its perfect start to conference play with a 22-5 and 22-2 doubleheader sweep at Saint Peter's on Saturday. The Golden Griffins improve to 21-11 and 5-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Canisius has won five straight and 10 of its last 13 games. Canisius tops the 20-win plateau for the sixth time in program history, with four of those seasons coming in the past four years.

Junior Brian Burton reached base in all 10 of his plate appearances on the day, going 7-for-7 with five runs scored, three home runs and nine RBI. Junior Sean Jamieson was 3-for-6 with five runs scored, three walks, two home runs and nine RBI, including a program-record eight RBI in the first game. Junior Steve McQuail was 4-for-5 with seven runs scored, two home runs and seven RBI. Senior Paul Panik was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI in game two. On the day, Fifteen Golden Griffins got a hit, 14 scored a run and 13 had at least one RBI.

Redshirt junior Shane Davis allowed four runs in his 6.1 innings of work to improve to 5-2 on the season and win for the fourth time in his last five starts. Senior Chris Cox allowed two runs and struck out nine in his six innings pitched for his second win of the campaign.

The Griffs scored two runs in the first inning of each game. In the opener, Burton had a two-RBI double to give Canisius the early 2-0 lead. The Griffs then broke open the game with an eight-run fourth and nine-run fifth inning. Burton led off the fourth with a homer, putting Canisius up 3-1. Sophomore Brad Medici had an RBI triple and junior Will Chomicki had an RBI single. After senior Perry Silverman was hit by a pitch, Jamieson followed with a three-run homer, with senior Ian Choy going back-to-back to put Canisius up 9-1. Sophomore Drew Pettit added an RBI single to cap the scoring in the fourth.

Canisius loaded the bases to start the fifth, with McQuail's two-RBI single starting the nine-run frame. Burton then had a three-run homer to right to clear the bases. Canisius loaded the bases for the second time in the inning - with Medici singling and Chomicki and redshirt freshman Jarred Flock walking. Jamieson then hit a grand slam to make the score 19-2.

Jamieson had an RBI single in the sixth, Choy had an RBI single in the eighth and Kevin Whitehead had a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring.

Davis allowed one run in his first six innings of work before running into trouble in the seventh when Saint Peter's (8-19, 2-6 MAAC) scored three runs. Freshmen Scott Whitehead and Jordan Cave yielded one run in 2.2 innings of relief.

McQuail had a two-run homer in the first inning of game two to give Canisius the early lead again. The Griffs wasted no time in breaking the game open - scoring eight (six unearned) in the second and five in the third. Jamieson drew a bases-loaded walk, Choy had a two-RBI single, McQuail had a sacrifice fly, senior Shayne Willson had an RBI single, Panik had a two-RBI double and freshman Josh Lewyckyj had an RBI single to round out the second.

In the third, three of the first four Canisius batters walked to load the bases. Burton had a two-RBI single and freshman Aaron Barley walked to re-load the bases. Panik brought home McQuail with a sacrifice fly, Lewyckyj had another RBI single and Barley would score on a Saint Peter's error - one of five in the second game for the Peacocks.

Canisius added three runs in the fourth when McQuail (two-run) and Burton went back-to-back with homers. In the sixth, Barley had an RBI double, Lewyckyj had his third RBI single of the game and senior Mike Deuschle had an RBI single.

Cox allowed single runs in the second and fourth innings, recording two strikeouts in each of his final three innings of work. Freshman Matt Thomas closed out the game with a scoreless seventh.

Canisius and Saint Peter's wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
