Junior and captain Maura
Frauenhofer took home first place of 80 runners as she led the Lady Griffs
to a second place standing at the Duquesne Duals Saturday Sept. 5. Men's
captain senior Vasilis Kariolis led
the men, taking thirteenth place among 109 competitors.
One of the reasons why the girls did so well is because
we had a couple of girls really step up," said head coach Pete Osmond. "Ellen Duane and Jess Nowak ran fantastic races. Ellen ran her best race in four
years here.
Frauenhofer was
shoulder to shoulder with Katie Kelly from Duquesne for the whole race. In the
last 200 meters, Katie passed her, and then Maura passed her back and won. "Maura
grinded it up, said Osmond. "We are so proud of her, and it's obvious the
amount of hard work she's done all year to get to this point. It was a great
run."
Frauenhofer won the race in 18:43, followed by Kelly (Duquesne)
in 18:46. Sophomore Christine Mulvihill (19:22)
and Julie Dahlkemperth
and 12 place respectively, while senior Ellen Duane finished the 5k in 19:57, with
Jess Nowak close behind in 20:10. (19:28) took 10
Freshman Alex
Simon ran his first collegiate race at Duquesne, finishing third in a time
of 27:46. Five Canisius runners finished in under 28:00, including leader Vasilis Kariolis with a time of 26:28,
as well as sophomore Jon McDonald in
27:32, followed by Simon.
"Alex competed in his first 8k ever today," noted
Osmond, "and he was our third guy. It was a really solid time, and having five
guys under 28:00 is fantastic. Sophomores Mark
Kearney (27:52) and Davidlee
Klimchuk (27:57) rounded out the top five with times of 27:52 and 27:57,
respectively.
"It was the perfect start to the season," said Osmond. "Going
to Notre Dame, we have tons of confidence in our abilities. The girls went down
with a goal of placing second, and we took a solid second place."
The Griffs return to the course at the National
Catholic Championship race at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana on Sept. 18.
Race time is set to begin at 4:45 p.m.
Notes:
Frauenhofer's win is the first that a Canisius student took first at the
Duquesne Duals in the three years of competition there... Since Osmond's coaching
career at Canisius began in 2003, Frauenhofer's win is the first time that a
Canisius student won a race outside of the Little Three competition against
Niagara and St. Bonaventure.
