Outdoor Track Concludes Regular Season With Solid Outing at Cardinal Classic

The Canisius men's and women's outdoor track teams posted four first-place finishes in a strong showing as the teams wrapped up their regular season Saturday at the Cardinal Classic, hosted by St. John Fisher in Pittsford, N.Y.
 
The women's team got the Golden Griffins off to a hot start in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, turning in two podium finishers. Junior Brooke Podgorski placed second in the event, crossing the line in 12:12.33, while sophomore Ella Krumpek finished just behind her fellow teammate in third, finishing in 12:18.14.
 
In the women's 400-meter, freshman Charlotte Keenan took first place with a time of 58.96. Redshirt junior Mara Mariani also placed top 10 in the race with an eighth-place finish (1:04.48).
 
Keenan's first-place finish in the 400-meter highlighted a day that saw the freshman turn in three top-five finishes. Keenan also took fifth in the 100-meter with her time of 12.95, and third in the 200-meter, finishing in 25.97.
 
Canisius also posted two top-10 finishes in the women's 800-meter. Sophomore Clara Sundberg took sixth (2:22.55), while junior Payton Calkins placed 10th (2:26.45).
 
On the men's side, Canisius posted five top-10 finishes in the 1,500-meter run, led by sophomore Nathaniel Fisher, who took first place in 4:00.06. Senior Joe Pivarunas also earned a podium finish, placing third in 4:03.78. Freshman Jack Nesbit (4:05.40) and Tim Lukasik (4:05.69) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while fellow freshman Jaxyn Mahoney rounded out the group in eighth (4:06.41).
 
The men's team also found success in the 800-meter, as five more Griffs recorded top-10 finishes, highlighted by a first-place effort from senior Brody Jones, who crossed the line in 1:57.68. Pivarunas finished seventh in 2:00.73, followed by senior Braden Tent in ninth (2:02.62) and sophomore Fenway Breckels in 10th (2:02.90).
 
In the 5,000-meter run, the Griffs added another first-place finish as junior Joseph Capuzzo delivered a
winning performance by crossing the line in 15:09.54 to lead the field. Sophomore Adam Kozman placed fourth in 15:36.13, while graduate student Jacob Raichel rounded out the group in fifth (15:54.84).

Canisius returns to action May 9-10 as the team competes in the 2026 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Mount St. Mary's at Morgan Track in Emmitsburg, Md.
