Outdoor Track Posts Top Finishes at UB Alumni Invite

Senior Joe Pivarunas and freshman Jaxyn Mahoney each captured first-place finishes to lead the men's and women's outdoor track teams at the UB Alumni Invite Friday at UB Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y.

Pivarunas highlighted a strong performance for the Golden Griffins in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing first with a time of 9:32.02. The Elma, N.Y., product was one of three Golden Griffins to place in the top six, as freshman Jack Stanford took fifth (10:18.69) and sophomore Mason Allee-Castro placed sixth (10:31.54).

Canisius also produced three top-10 finishes in the 1,500-meter. Sophomore Nathaniel Fisher led the group with a sixth-place finish (3:57.54), followed by senior Brody Jones in eighth (4:01.24) and sophomore Fenway Breckels in ninth (4:01.44).

Mahoney continued his impressive rookie campaign with a first-place finish in the 800-meter, clocking in at 1:51.13. Fellow freshman Jack Nesbit claimed eighth (1:55.52), while Jones added an 11th-place finish (1:56.82). Freshman Daniel Granville also contributed a top-10 result, placing sixth in the 5,000-meter with a time of 15:23.26.

Both relay teams turned in strong performances in the 4x400-meter. On the women's side, the group of freshmen Charlotte Keenan, along with juniors Sofia Ruffa, Ella Herman, and Jocelyn Tracy, placed sixth with a time of 4:17.26. The men's team of Nesbit, Jones, Mahoney, and senior Braden Tent earned a third-place finish, crossing the line in 3:24.47.

Sophomore Ella Krumpek secured a podium finish in the women's 1,500-meter, placing second with a time of 4:48.33, while sophomore Clara Sundberg finished 11th (5:07.72).

Freshman Julia Gullo added a fourth-place finish in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:57.78). Keenan also enjoyed an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter with a time of 25.70.

The Griffs also saw success in the 5,000-meter, with two runners placing in the top 10. Junior Brooke Podgorski finished seventh (19:03.91), and junior Payton Calkins took 10th (19:38.87).

Canisius concludes its regular-season portion of its outdoor schedule, traveling to Pittsford, N.Y., to compete in the Cardinal Classic April 24-25.
