Garland, Schmidt Record Wins to Pace Outdoor Track at Cardinal Classic

Seniors Pat Garland and Kayla Schmidt won their respective 10,000-meter races to pace the Canisius men's and women's outdoor track teams in the Cardinal Classic Saturday at the Polisseni Track & Field Complex on the campus of St. John Fisher in Pittsford, N.Y.

The victories by Garland and Schmidt capped a day at the track that saw the Golden Griffins record a combined 10 results in the top 10 in their final tune up before the MAAC Championships in two weeks.

Garland claimed first place in the men's 10,000-meter race, crossing the finish line in 35:17.57, nearly three minutes ahead of the second-place finisher from Le Moyne.
In the women's 10,000-meter race, Schmidt highlighted a 1-2 finish for the Griffs as she turned in a time of 37:02.72 while freshman Nadalie Latchaw claimed second after she finished the race in 38:27.86.

Junior Jacqueline Appenheimer recorded a pair of top 10 finishes as she took fourth in the women's 1,500-meter final with a time of 4:46.85 and placed ninth in the women's 800-meter race, crossing the finish line in 2:22.52. Appenheimer was one of two racers to place in the top 10 of the women's 800 as senior Taylor Heschke claimed fourth with a time of 2:19.78.

Canisius had five runners place within the top 15 of the men's 5,000-meter race as freshman Ryan Giglia took sixth (4:02.10), sophomore Brody Jones placed seventh (4:02.53),  graduate student Max Chew claimed 11th (4:04.84), senior Kevin Board finished 13th (4:05.53) and freshman Nathaniel Fisher took 15th (4:06.19).

Senior Chloe Breen took fifth place in the women's 5,000-meter race, posting a time of 18:29.38. Sophomore Brooke Podgorski turned in a 10th-place finish in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, posting a time of 12:12.34.

Canisius returns to action in the 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. The two-day meet is scheduled for May 10-11.
