Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Finish Fifth at National Catholic Championships

The Golden Griffins men's and women's cross country teams both placed fifth with team scores of 155 and 145, during Friday's National Catholic Championships in South Bend, Ind.
 
On the men's side, junior Nick Neamtu placed 18th, clocking in at 25:39.97, while senior Patrick Crowley and junior Anthony Belfatto placed 31st and 46th in the field with their times of 26:13.14 and 26:39.09. Freshman Evan Whittaker placed 58th with a time of 27:04.09, followed by junior Henry Burton in 62nd crossing the line in 27:06.80.
 
Host, Notre Dame recorded a team score of 25 to win the men's five-mile race. Dayton took second with 65, followed by conference foe Siena (105), Xavier (Ohio) (131), and Canisius. St. Mary's (Calif.) (167), DePaul (175), and Saint Louis (183) placed sixth through eighth. Detroit Mercy (206) finished ninth despite having the individual champion, Ben Kendell, followed by Holy Cross (261) and Creighton (312).
 
For the women, senior Siobhan Quinn finished with a time of 17:43.68 to place sixth. Seniors Carlin Sullivan and Aileen Doyle finished inside the top-40 with times of 18:28.91 and 19:02.88, respectively. Freshman Carly Benson finished in 19:15.06 and sophomore Kayla Leo in 19:59.47 to round out the Blue and Gold's top-five runners.
 
The Fighting Irish took the top-four spots on the women's side, led by individual champion Annie Heffernan, recording a team score of 18. Dayton (83) finished second, followed by Saint Louis (96), Siena (108), and the Griffs in fifth. St. Mary's (Calif.) (153), Holy Cross (185), Creighton (219), DePaul (222), Detroit Mercy (259) and Xavier (Ohio) (328) finished sixth-11th, respectively.
 
Earlier in the day, members of the men's and women's cross country teams ran in the UB Stampede in Buffalo, N.Y. Juniors Rachel Joachimi and Connor Davies were the Griffs top finishers, crossing the line with times of 25:32.2 and 32:11 respectively. No team scores were recorded.
