Canisius
College seniors Greg Logins and Julius Coles were honored on Tuesday for their work in the classroom by the
Association of Jesuit College and Universities and the Jesuit Basketball
Spotlight. Logins is one of six players nationally to be named to the 2010-11
National Jesuit All-Academic Men's Basketball Team, while Coles earned
honorable mention accolades.
The
National Jesuit All-Academic Men's Basketball awards program represents
student-athletes from the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities spread across the
United States that play basketball on all three levels of the NCAA and also in
the NAIA. They share the mission of a Jesuit education, founded nearly 500
years ago, under the principles of St. Ignatius Loyola to educate young people
to become men and women dedicated to service and compassionate leadership.
Students at Jesuit colleges and universities have long excelled in the
classroom and in the community, but they also have played a major role in
collegiate basketball in the last 100 years.
Logins,
who was recently named to the Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association
(ADA) Scholar-Athlete Team, earned his undergraduate degree in physical
education in May 2010 and is currently working toward his master's degree in
sport administration. On the court, Logins closed out his playing career as one
of five players in school history to score more than 1,200 career points while
registering more than 750-career rebounds. A Preseason All-MAAC choice before
the 2010-11 campaign, Logins averaged 11.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in
30 contests, and he ended his senior season ranked second in the MAAC with his
45.4 percent effort from behind the 3-point arc.
Logins is
joined on the 2010-11 National Jesuit All-Academic Men's Basketball Team by
Zach Ashworth (Scranton), Chris Johansen (Regis), Andrew Keister (Holy Cross),
Ryan Olander (Fairfield) and Marc Trasolini (Santa Clara).
Coles is
one of four student-athletes to be named to the 2010-11 National Jesuit
All-Academic Men's Basketball Team Honorable Mention List. A 2011 MAAC
All-Academic honoree, the guard earned his undergraduate degree in
communications in May 2010 and is currently working toward his master's degree in
sport administration at the College. He made 29 starts in his senior campaign
and ends his playing career as a Griff as one of 32 members of the school's
famed 1,000-career point club. He ranks 18th in career scoring in
school history with 1,212 career points and he is one of four players in
program history to make more than 150 career 3-point field goals. He ranked
third on the team in scoring average with 10.9 points per game and he pulled
down an average of 4.1 rebounds per game, highlighted by his career-high 12
rebounds in the team's win at Lamar Dec. 22.
Coles is joined on the
honorable mention list by Brian Conklin (Saint Louis), Kalen Korver (Creighton)
and Nick Leon (Saint Peter's).
