Men’s Basketball Adds Demarris Winters from NCAA Transfer Portal

Canisius head men's basketball coach Jim Christian announced today that Demarris Winters will join the Golden Griffin men's basketball program for the 2026-27 season.

Winters, who played the 2025-26 season at UTRGV in Edinburg, Texas, joins the Canisius program from the NCAA Transfer Portal. He will have three years of collegiate eligibility remaining, starting next season.

"Demarris knows what it takes to win. He won three state championships in high school and he was a part of a team at UTRGV that won 19 games last year," Christian said. "He is an excellent shooter and he plays with great pace, both on and off the ball. He gained valuable experience at the Division I level last season, and his father is a coach, so he understands what goes into being successful at this level."

Winters played 22 games last season at UTRGV, where he averaged 2.3 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. He scored a season-high 11 points in a win over Biblical Studies (Texas), and he also dished out a season-best five assists in that game. He knocked down multiple 3-point field goals in three games, and 11 of his 18 makes from the field came from behind the 3-point range. He ended the season by shooting 47.4 percent from the floor and 39.3 percent from 3-point land.

Before joining the UTRGV program, Winters won four varsity letters at Richmond Heights High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and helped lead the Spartans to three-straight Ohio High School State Athletic Association state championship titles. A former three-star recruit, he was ranked as the ninth-best player in the State of Ohio in the 2025 graduating class. He was named to the 2024-25 All-Ohio Division V Boys Basketball Second Team by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association.
