The five members of the Canisius
College senior class of 2011 combined to score 45 of the Golden Griffins' 49
second-half points, and the Blue and Gold shot 61.5 percent from the field and
64.3 percent from 3-point range in the final 20 minutes en route to a 75-58 win
over Loyola Sunday afternoon on Senior Day in the Koessler Athletic Center. The
Griffs close out the 2010-11 regular season with a 15-14 overall mark and a 9-9
league record, while the Greyhounds moved to 15-14 overall and 10-8 MAAC mark.
The win for Canisius ensures the
Griffs will be the No. 6 seed in next weekend's 2011 Spark Energy MAAC
Basketball Championship in Bridgeport, Conn. The Blue and Gold earn a
first-round bye with the sixth-seed, and will play No. 3 seed Rider at 10 p.m.,
Saturday, March 5 in the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard. That game can be heard live through the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network and will be shown live on MSG.
Canisius senior Greg Logins scored a game-high 26 points, with 23 of those coming
in the second half, after he went 9-for-15 from the field and 8-for-10 from
3-point range to go with seven rebounds and two steals. Fellow senior Elton Frazier added 18 points, seven
rebounds and a career-high five blocks in the victory, with his base-line
jumper at the 19:25 mark of the second half allowing him to become the 32nd
player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Senior Julius Coles scored nine points while
fellow senior Robert Goldsberry added
seven points, six assists, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals to the
winning effort, which saw Canisius overcome an 11-point first half deficit.
"At halftime, I went into the locker
room and didn't have to say much, the guys knew what they had to do," Canisius
head coach Tom Parrotta said. "We
knew all week what we had to do here. We had two games, just lay all the cards
on the table and go from there. We jumped into them a bit in the second half
and our seniors really led that charge. We got some great minutes from our
bench, but those five guys have been locked in a determined all week long."
Loyola raced out to an 11-point lead
at 26-15 with 7:05 left in the first half after sophomore forward Erik Etherly
scored two of his 11 points. Frazier scored six-straight points for the Griffs
to make the score 26-21 with 5:00 left before the break, capped by a dunk off
an offensive rebound. Loyola pushed its cushion back to nine at 32-23 with 57
seconds left before halftime, but sophomore Alshwan Hymes sent the Griffs into the locker room at the
intermission down six at 32-26 after he drilled a deep 3-point field goal from
the left wing with 45 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, Canisius knotted
the game at 34-34 with an 8-2 run over a span of 3:48, capped by a 3-pointer by
Logins. The senior from Sodus, N.Y., put the Griffs up 37-35 moments later with
another trey before the Greyhounds used a 5-2 scoring spurt in 1:08 to take a
40-39 lead on a 3-point field goal by senior Brian Rudolph. That would be the
last lead Loyola would hold in the game, as Canisius outscored the Greyhounds
27-7 over the next 7:20, with Logins accounting for 15 of those points, all on
five made 3-pointers.
Loyola shot 40 percent from the
field, 33.3 percent from behind the 3-point line and 44.4 percent from the
free-throw line in the loss, while out rebounding Canisius by a 37-30 count.
Rudolph posted a double-double in the loss for Loyola with his 14 points and 10
rebounds, with Dylon Cormier adding 11 points and Justin Drummond chipping in
10.
The Griffs ended the day shooting
49.1 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from 3-point land and 90.9 percent
from the foul line in the victory, which was the team's six-straight home win.
Canisius, which turned the ball over just eight times for the game and once in
the second half, turned 13 Loyola turnovers into 17 points, while holding a
12-9 advantage on fast-break points.
Canisius will enter the 2011 Spark
Energy MAAC Basketball Championships as the sixth seed for the first time since
the 1998 postseason event. The team's first-round bye is the program's first
since the 1999 tournament.
