Nate Deer Commits to Join Men’s Basketball Roster

Canisius head men's basketball coach Jim Christian announced today that Nate Deer has committed to join the Golden Griffins' roster for the 2026-27 season.

Deer joins the Canisius program after spending the 2025-26 season at Oakland University. A 6-foot-10, 240-pound forward, he will have one season of eligibility remaining, starting next year.

"Nate is a good athlete who will provide us with a physical presence in the post," Christian said. "He has a knack for being able to finish around the basket, and he will certainly help us on the glass. Last season, half his rebounds were offensive boards. He understands positioning, and he is driven to go get the basketball."

In his one season at Oakland, Deer played 10 games in an injury-shortened season. In those 10 games, he scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, with seven of those boards coming off the offensive glass. He shot 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from the floor and was credited with his lone assist of the season in the Golden Grizzlies' season-opener against eventual national champion Michigan.

A native of Adelaide, Australia, Deer started his collegiate career at Howard College, an NJCAA school located in Big Spring, Texas. In his two seasons (2022-23 and 2023-24) as a member of the Hawks program, he played in 40 games, where he averaged 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. In 2023-24, Deer was good for 8.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest, and he ended his time at Howard shooting 61.0 percent from the field. In 2024-25, he played 25 games off the bench for Texas State
