Canisius senior Greg Logins scored a team-high 20 points and pulled down seven
rebounds while fellow senior Elton
Frazier added 18 points and seven boards to help lead the Golden Griffins
to a 72-63 win over Manhattan Friday night in the Koessler Athletic Center. The
win snapped the Blue and Gold's three-game losing streak and improved the team
to 14-14 overall and 8-9 in MAAC play, while the Jaspers slipped to 6-23
overall and 3-14 in league action.
The win, coupled with a Siena loss
at Fairfield on Friday night, has placed Canisius all alone in sixth-place in
the MAAC standings as the league heads to the final day of the regular season
on Sunday. A Canisius victory Sunday over Loyola on Senior Day would give the
Griffs the sixth seed and a first-round bye in next week's 2011 Spark Energy
MAAC Basketball Championship in Bridgeport, Conn.
Senior Julius Coles added 13 points in the win, and he was also credited
with a team-high six assists, which matches his career best effort. Sophomore Gaby Belardo chipped in 11 points and
five assists for the Griffs, who shot 44.4 percent from the field, 45.5 percent
from 3-point range and 75.9 percent from the charity stripe in the win.
Manhattan's Michael Alvarado came
off the bench to score a game-high 23 points in the loss for Manhattan, which
saw their four-game winning streak in the Koessler Athletic Center come to an
end with the loss. Sophomore George Beamon posted 22 points, highlighted by his
14-for-14 effort at the free-throw line for the Jaspers in the losing cause.
Manhattan took a 41-40 lead with
15:08 left in the game after Alvarado darted through the lane and laid one off
the glass. From there, Canisius took control, and a 3-pointer by Coles with
12:41 left on the clock put the Griffs up 43-41, a lead the Blue and Gold would
not give up the rest of the way. Frazier scored four points-straight points to
push the Griffs' cushion to 48-41 with 11:11 left on the clock. Manhattan was
able to cut the Griffs' hold to 52-47 on the power of six-made free-throws over
a span of 2:18, but a trey from the corner by senior guard Robert Goldsberry with 6:59 left in the contest propelled Canisius
to an eight-point margin at 55-47.
Canisius, which held Manhattan
without a field goal for 14:07 in the second half, took an 11-point lead at
60-49 with 3:14 left on the clock after Belardo drained a 3-pointer from the
top of the key off an assist from redshirt freshman Reggie Groves. The Jaspers went 7-for-8 from the
charity stripe over a span of 1:51 to make the game a six-point contest at
62-56 in favor of the Griffs before Frazier, Belardo and Coles combined to hit
5-of-6 charity tosses to dive the margin back to 67-58 with 59 second left to
play.
"I told the guys in the locker room
after the game that this wasn't the prettiest win, but when push came to shove,
we had guys step up and make plays when we needed them," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "We won this game
because we went out there and grinded one out against a pretty talented team.
We held them without a field goal for 14 minutes and we out rebounded them, so
there were some pretty good things going on out there tonight."
Manhattan shot 39.5 percent from the
field and just 12.5 percent from behind the 3-point line after going 1-for-8
from long-range in the game. The Jaspers hit 84.8 percent and held an 18-9
advantage in points off turnovers, but the Griffs finished the night with a
31-26 lead on the glass and were credited with 18 assists on 20-made field
goals.
Canisius will wrap up the regular
season Sunday at 2 p.m., when the team host s Loyola in the Koessler Athletic
Center. Prior to Sunday's tipoff, the men's basketball team will honor its five
seniors, who will be playing in their final home game. Senior Day ceremonies
will begin at 1:45 p.m.
