The
Canisius College baseball team continued to score double-digit runs in
conference play and received another solid starting pitching performance in a
13-4 win at Saint Peter's on the Sunday. The Golden Griffins improve to 6-0 in
the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the best start in program history.
Canisius is 22-11 overall, having won six straight and 11 of 14.
Junior Steve
McQuail was one of three Griffs with three hits on the day, going 3-for-6
with seven RBI, including the game-winning, tie-breaking grand slam in the fifth inning.
Junior Will Chomicki was 3-for-5
with three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base. Junior Sean Jamieson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while senior Ian Choy was 2-for-3 with two runs
scored and a two-run home run.
Senior Mike
Goemans (3-2) allowed two unearned runs in seven innings of work, allowing
just three hits and zero walks while striking out five. Seniors Shayne Willson and Andrew Van'tWout each threw an inning of relief with Willson
allowing two solo homers in the eighth - the first runs of the season allowed
by Willson in .
The Griffs scored one in the first as Chomicki
and Jamieson walked to start the game. After a sacrifice bunt from Choy,
McQuail's RBI groundout put Canisius up 1-0. The Griffs added one in the third
when Jamieson drew a leadoff walk and McQuail scored the junior with an RBI
double.
Saint Peter's (8-20, 2-7 MAAC) tied the game in
the fourth with two unearned runs. After a one-out walk, Conor Mullee reached
on a fielding error by Jamieson, scoring Chris Grimes. John Lynch then had an
RBI double to tie the game at 2-2.
The Griffs responded with 10 straight runs.
Chomicki led off the fifth with a double, Jamieson singled and Choy was hit by
a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. McQuail jumped on the first pitch
from Dom Macaluso and went to the opposite field with a grand slam to right, putting
Canisius up 6-2.
Choy had a two-run homer in the sixth, while
sophomore Brad Medici had an RBI
single and Chomicki had a two-RBI single in the seventh. The Griffs added
single runs in the eighth (Paul Panik RBI
single) and ninth (McQuail RBI single).
Canisius
has its only mid-week game on Tuesday, when the Golden Griffins play at Le
Moyne. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

sweeps Saint Peter's for the second consecutive meeting in Jersey City and has
won 12 of the last 13 between the teams... The 6-0 start to MAAC play is the best
in school history, besting the 5-1 start by the 1994 and 2008 teams... Choy has
at least two runs scored, two RBI and two hits in each of the last three games...
Goemans has allowed six earned runs (1.95 ERA) in his last four starts (27.2
innings pitched)... McQuail has 43 RBI on the season, which already ties for the
