Jumping
out to an early 4-0 lead, the Canisius College baseball team rebounded with a 16-4
win at Youngstown State on Wednesday. The Golden Griffins improve to 15-9 on
the season.
Sophomore
Drew Pettit had a game-high four
hits, one of five Golden Griffins with multi-hit days. Senior Perry Silverman was 3-for-6 with two
runs scored and two RBI while junior Brian
Burton was 2-for-6 with three RBI and a home run.
Four
Canisius pitchers saw action on the day, with redshirt freshman Nathan Linseman making his first start
of the season. Linseman threw four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two
walks. Freshman Billy Martin (2-3) allowed
one run in three innings of relief.
The
Griffs scored four runs on three hits in the first. Silverman singled and Sean Jamieson walked, with both moving up on a sacrifice bunt from Ian Choy. Silverman scored on a wild
pitch and after a walk to Shayne Willson
put runners at the corners, the Griffs executed a double steal to take a 2-0
lead. Senior Paul Panik scored
Willson on an RBI single and eventually came around to score on an error
following a double from Pettit.
The
Griffs added single runs in the second and fourth, with Burton producing an RBI
single and Choy recording an RBI double to put Canisius up 6-0. Youngstown
State (10-11) got on the board with one run in the fifth. The Griffs made it
8-1 in the eighth on a two-run home run from Burton. The Penguins cut the
Canisius lead to 8-4 with a three-run eighth.
Canisius
then broke the game open with an eight-run ninth inning, when the Griffs sent
12 batters to the plate. The Griffs scored two runs on wild pitches and got an
RBI single from Willson, two-RBI single from Pettit, RBI single from redshirt
freshman Jarred Flock and two-RBI
single from Silverman.
Canisius
starts a three-game series at Delaware with a single game on Friday. First
pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Game Notes: Silverman's
11-game hitting streak matches Jamieson for the longest streak on the team this
season. Silverman has also scored at least one run in each of those 11 games...
Canisius scored double-digit runs for the ninth time this season and fourth
time in the last five games... Canisius has scored four or more runs in an inning
15 times in 24 games... Linseman made his fourth career start and first since
March 22, 2009, at Bucknell. The four innings are the most pitched by Linseman
in his four appearances... Burton has two hits in three straight games... Martin's
relief appearance was the first of his career after making six starts... Pettit
is 8-for-12 with six RBI and four doubles in the last three games... Willson
extended his hitting streak to eight games, raising his batting average 60 points
since March 21
