Rally Falls Short as Baseball Drops Series Finale

Down 6-2 heading into the eighth, the Canisius College baseball team scored twice in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth, but couldn't come all the way back as the Golden Griffins lost 6-5 to Lipscomb on Sunday. The Golden Griffins lose their first series of the season and are now 7-4 on the 2010 season.

Senior Ian Choy was 2-or-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while redshirt freshman Jarred Flock was 2-for-2 and reached base in all four plate appearances. Junior Sean Jamieson scored two runs and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Griffs scored twice in the top of the first with three hits in the inning — back-to-back doubles from Jamieson and Choy and an RBI infield single from Steve McQuail. The Bisons responded as Tyler Wilson led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right.

That homer started a stretch of six consecutive runs by Lipscomb (3-7) with the next five runs all being driven in by Zach Messer. The Bisons second baseman had a sacrifice fly in the third, RBI double in the fifth and a two-out, bases-clearing double in the sixth to make the score 6-2.

The Griffs started their rally in the eighth when Jamieson and Choy reached to start the inning and moved up 90 feet on a balk. A single up the middle from Shayne Willson scored Jamieson and Choy scored on a double play ball induced by reliever Chad Fromm, effectively ending the Canisius rally.

The Griffs got the first two batters on base in the ninth inning as well with senior Paul Panik drawing a walk and Flock singling through the left side. Pinch runner Will Chomicki was retired on a fielder's choice at third base and an infield single from senior Perry Silverman loaded the bases. That would be the last hit for the Griffs as Fromm closed out the game by getting an out on a fielder's choice by Jamieson and groundout to second from Choy.

Redshirt freshman Billy Martin (1-1) took the loss for the Griffs by allowing four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Davey Hackett (1-1) picked up the win by allowing four runs and striking out six in seven-plus innings of work.

Canisius returns to the field for four games next weekend at the Johnny Gill Memorial hosted by Winthrop University. The Griffs start play against Toledo on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
