Baseball Sees Season End at MAAC Championships

No. 5 seed Canisius was eliminated on the opening day of the 2026 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Baseball Championship as it fell to No. 4 Merrimack and No. 6 seed Marist Wednesday at Heritage Financial Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
 
The Golden Griffins suffered a 7-0 shutout at the hands of the Warriors to open the tournament before coming up short in a 10-8 setback to the Red Foxes in an elimination contest  Canisius finished the season with a 21-27 overall record and a 17-13 ledger in MAAC play. 
 
MERRIMACK RECAP
Merrimack took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Jayden Hamilton delivered an RBI single to left to open the scoring before Brooks Craigue notched the second run of the frame on an error. 
 
Merrimack added to its lead in the third as DeShiro recorded a single up the middle to make it 3-0.
 
The Warriors put the game out of reach in the seventh, plating four runs on two hits. Craigue started the damage with a two-run double to left before Joey Frammartino followed with another two-run double to close out the scoring and secure the shutout victory.

Senior Felix Morin started the opening round contest and took the loss after 6.1 innings, allowing four hits and surrendering three runs (two earned). Colby Barker picked up the win, hurling 3.2 innings of shutout relief that saw him all just one hit and one walk. 
 
The Griffs were held to just four hits in the opening game of their tournament appearance. Craigue and Joey Frammartino picked up two hits apiece for the Warriors.

 
MARIST RECAP:
Marist opened the scoring in the top of the first as it loaded the bases before Noel Rivera got the Red Foxes on the board with a bunt single that scored two runs as a result of a throwing error. Connor Lawrence followed with a squeeze bunt that notched the final run of the frame as Marist jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
 
The Red Foxes took control of the contest in the fourth with a seven-run outburst that was highlighted by Luke Monico's grand slam to left and a two-run triple from Chris Diaz to make it a 10-0 contest. 
 
The Griffs answered back with seven runs of their own in the fifth inning. Cox sparked the rally with a two-run single to center before Cisco added an RBI groundout to trim the deficit to 10-3. Redshirt junior Thomas Zwirecki followed with an RBI double to left, and junior JC Spinosa drove in another with a single. Spinosa later scored on a balk before senior Andrew Marcello capped the inning with an RBI single to right, as Canisius cut the deficit to 10-7 
 
The following inning saw the Griffs continue to chip away at the deficit as Cisco delivered his second RBI of the day through the right side, making it a 10-8 ballgame.
 
The Griffs comeback stalled as Marist held Canisius hitless through the final three frames to secure the 10-8 and avoid elimination.

Junior Joe LoPinto got the nod on the mound in game two of the championships, taking the loss after 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and six earned runs. The Griffs strung together 14 hits in the contest as redshirt freshman Bennett Cox and senior Mason Cisco each delivered a pair of RBI.

Logan Schall (3-4) earned the win, hurling two innings of hitless relief before Jack Sullivan picked up his second save of the campaign with a ninth-inning effort that saw him fan two of the four batters he faced. 
 
GAME NOTES
• On the mound, Morin capped off his senior campaign with a career-high 71 strikeouts on the season, leaving his mark in the record book with 204 strikeouts.
• The Griffs shutout loss in game one against Merrimack marks the first time the Griffs were shutout in a MAAC Championship game since the 2019 season, when the Griffs fell 5-0 to Fairfield on May 25, 2019.
• In his final three appearances in the Blue and Gold, senior Sam Staerker recorded 13 strikeouts in 8.1 innings. The Panama City Beach, Fla., native finished his final season with a career-high in strikeouts with 57.
• With a hit in each of the Griffs two games, Zwirecki finished the season with 26 hits and 22 RBI over his last 15 games. The redshirt junior led the Griffs with 47 RBI.
• With his 20 stolen bags on the year, Cox finished the campaign tied for eighth in the record book for stolen bases in a single season.
• In the two games, the Griffs committed six errors, with three in each game.
