Lipscomb?s Smith Shuts Down Baseball

Lipscomb senior Josh Smith allowed four hits and walked three while striking out seven in seven shutout innings as the Canisius College baseball team lost 7-1 in the series opener between the teams in Nashville, Tenn. Canisius loses the series opener for the first time in three series this season and is now 6-3 in 2010.

Senior Perry Silverman and junior Sean Jamieson each had two of the seven Canisius hits on the day as Silverman scored the only Canisius run. Jamieson extended his hitting streak to nine games with a fourth-inning single.

After Lipscomb took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Bisons scored in three straight innings, getting three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. Lipscomb took advantage of two Canisius errors in the third as Logan Hostettler led off by reaching on an error by Steve McQuail. A one-out double from Tyler Wilson and hit by pitch to M.L. Williams loaded the bases. With the infield playing in, an Andrew Nickerson grounder to first baseman Brian Burton resulted in a throwing error, leading to Hostettler scoring. The Bisons then scored on a fielder's choice and rundown later in the inning. Antonio Butler had an RBI single in the fourth and Ryan Wilkins ahd a two-run homer in the fifth put Lipscomb up 7-0.

The Griffs scored their lone run of the game in the eighth when Silverman, Jamieson and Ian Choy put together consecutive singles with Choy's single scoring Silverman.

Shane Davis (1-1) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing five runs, twoearned, in four innings of work. Senior Chris Cox allowed two unearned runs while striking out five in four innings of relief. Smith earned the win with his seven shutout innings on 114 pitches.

Canisius and Lipscomb play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
