Le
Moyne built a 7-3 lead, and a rally by the Canisius College baseball team in
the final two innings wasn't enough as the Golden Griffins lost 7-6 to Le Moyne
in a non-conference game at the Demske Sports Complex on Tuesday. The loss
snaps the three-game winning streak for Canisius and drops its record to 14-9.
Sophomore
Drew Pettit was 2-for-4 with two RBI
while junior Brian Burton was
2-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior Sean
Jamieson also had two hits, reaching base in four of his six plate
appearances, while leadoff hitter Perry
Silverman was 1-for-3 with two walks, extending his career-best hitting streak
to 10 games.
Le
Moyne scored in six innings on the day, recording one run in five of those
innings. The Griffs answered the Dolphins in the bottom of the first when
Silverman walked, Jamieson moved him to third with a double and an RBI
groundout from Ian Choy tied the
game at 1-1. Le Moyne (13-12) scored twice in the top of the second and the
Griffs answered in the bottom of the second when Burton led off with a single,
moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a
sacrifice fly from Brad Medici to
make the score 3-2.
The
Dolphins scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, with the
Griffs getting a leadoff homer from Steve
McQuail in the sixth to make the score 6-3. Le Moyne added a run in the
eighth, which would prove to be the difference.
Down
7-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the first four Canisius batters of
the inning reached base. McQuail
led off with a walk, Shayne Willson
singled and Burton walked to load the bases. Pettit doubled to the gap in
right-center, with the ground-rule double scoring two runs and making the score
7-5. After pinch hitter Jarred Flock
popped out, Will Chomicki re-loaded
the bases when the junior was hit by a pitch. After Silverman struck out, pinch
hitter Paul Panik drew a
bases-loaded walk to make the score 7-6.
Luke
Nellis came into the game - the third Le Moyne pitcher of the inning - and got
Choy to strike out looking to end the Canisius rally.
Canisius
used three pitchers in the game, with starter Chris Cox (1-1) taking the loss for the Griffs. The senior allowed
four runs on six hits, walked three and struck out five in four innings of
work. Le Moyne starter Erik Lambe earned
the win by allowing two runs in five innings. Nellis recorded the save by
throwing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Canisius
returns to the field at Youngstown State on Wednesday. Game time is set for 3
p.m.
