The Canisius College baseball team scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Dayton responded by scoring 17 consecutive runs as the Golden Griffins lost 17-3 in the first game of a three-game series at Time Warner Cable Stadium on Friday. The Golden Griffins are now 10-6 on the season.
The first three Canisius batters reached base in the top of the first. Senior Perry Silverman singled, junior Sean Jamieson followed with a double and senior Ian Choy had a two-RBI single to make it 2-0.
Dayton held the Griffs to four hits during the following eight innings as the Flyers answered with two runs in the first, one in the second and broke the game open with four in the third inning.
Canisius starter Shane Davis (2-2) took the loss, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, in six innings of work. Sophomore Ryan Fennell and freshman Jordan Cave each threw an inning of relief. Choy, junior Brian Burton and sophomore Brad Medici led the Griffs with two hits apiece.
Dayton right fielder Aaron Dunsmore was 4-for-5 with five RBI and two home runs while second baseman Zach Jacob was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, four RBI and a home run. The top four hitters in the Dayton lineup combined for 12 of the teamÕs 17 hits and 10 runs scored.
Canisius and Dayton return to the field on Saturday, with the single, nine-inning game scheduled for 1 p.m.
