Six-Run Ninth Leads to Season-Opening Comeback Win for Baseball

Taking advantage of a two-out throwing error in the top of the ninth, the Canisius College baseball team scored six runs in final inning to rally for a 9-5 victory over Wright State at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. on Friday afternoon.

Junior Sean Jamieson was 2-for-5 with a game-high three RBIs, including a home run in his first at-bat as a Golden Griffin. Junior Brian Burton was 2-for-4 while senior Perry Silverman and sophomore Brad Medici each had two RBI. Redshirt freshman Jarred Flock scored two runs in his first game as a Golden Griffin.

Jamieson gave Canisius the early 1-0 lead with a one-out home run in the top of the first. The Raiders scored two in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1. The Griffs tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Flock reached on an error, moved to second on a single from Medici, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI grounder by Jamieson. Canisius tied the game in the fourth when Steve McQuail led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Shayne Willson and scored on a one-out RBI single from Burton.

The Raiders would take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Tristan Moore reached on a one-out walk by Shane Davis, one of six walks on the day by Davis. Moore moved to third on a single by Garrett Gary and scored on a squeeze bunt from Jake Hibberd. Junior Josh Marshall relieved Davis and Gerald Ogrinc singled through the right side to score Gray and put the Raiders up by two.

Senior Ian Choy started the Canisius rally with a leadoff double in the ninth. After McQuail struck out, Willson followed with an RBI single to make it 5-4. Burton doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Drew Pettit struck out looking and Flock was intentionally walked to load the bases. Medici hit a grounder to third, but a throwing error allowed Medici to reach and Burton and Willson to come around and score the go-ahead run.

Silverman continued the rally with a two-RBI single, scoring Flock and Medici. Jamieson also had an RBI single to score Silverman and put Canisius up 9-6. Willson allowed a one-out walk, the only Wright State batter to reach against the senior in the ninth.

Davis went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on three hits, walking six and striking out two in the no decision. Marshall (1-0) threw 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Canisius continues the four-game set at the USA Baseball Complex on Saturday, against Illinois-Chicago. The nine-inning doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.

Notes: Canisius sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the ninth… Freshman Aaron Barley saw his first collegiate action as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the ninth… Canisius wins its season opener for the second time in the last three seasons… Canisius and Wright State played for just the second time with Wright State winning the previous meeting… Medici and Burton each extended their hitting streaks to six games as the two finished the 2009 season with a hit in the final five games. The six game streak for Medici is a career-long… In his last nine appearances (16.1 innings), Marshall is 2-0 with a 3.31 earned run average
The no-decision for Davis was just the third for the redshirt junior in 27 career starts.
