Men's Basketball Grinds Out a Win at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Canisius senior Elton Frazier scored a team-high 13 points and sophomore Alshwan Hymes came off the bench to record 12 points as the Golden Griffins defeated Binghamton 55-45 Tuesday night in the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. The win improves Canisius to 3-2 on the year, while the host Bearcats slipped to 1-5 with the loss.

Canisius was able to pull away midway through the first half when the Blue and Gold went on a 14-3 run over a span of 6:09, capped by a 3-pointer by Hymes. Canisius held Binghamton to 12 points in the game's first 20 minutes while allowing the Bearcats to shoot 21.7 percent (5-for-23) from the floor.

"We talked all week about playing harder and I thought we did that in the first half," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "In the second half, I felt like they made a few baskets and starting getting the crowd behind them, but to our credit, we made free throws down the stretch and locked up a road win, which don't always come easy at this level."

The Griffs led by as many as 18 in the second half, but Binghamton forward Greer Wright took over on offense, posting 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, with 10 of those coming from the free-throw line. Binghamton was able to cut the Griffs' cushion to seven with 2:14 left in regulation, but Frazier came out of a timeout and sunk two free throws to put the Blue and Gold up nine at 50-41. Binghamton chipped into the lead to make it a seven-point game again with 1:25 left on the clock, but a layup by senior Tomas Vazquez-Simmons and a pair of free-throws by senior Robert Goldsberry in a span of 33 seconds sealed the win for Canisius.

The Griffs shot 40 percent from the field and a season-high 58.3 percent from 3-point range in the win while out rebounding Binghamton 38-27. The Bearcats, which entered the game ranked 334th in the nation in scoring offense, shot 30.4 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Canisius will open MAAC play Friday, Dec. 3 at Iona. Tipoff in New Rochelle, N.Y. is set for 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes: This was the first meeting between Canisius and Binghamton in basketball... Goldsberry dished out a season-high four assists in the win... Vazquez-Simmons had nine rebounds and added a block to his school record total, while also moving his streak of consecutive games with a block to 24, dating back to last season.
