Volleyball Falls in Four to Loyola

Despite double-digit kills from four players, the Canisius College volleyball team couldn't get its second consecutive MAAC win as the Golden Griffins lost 32-30, 16-30, 30-25, 30-27 to Loyola on Sunday afternoon in the Koessler Athletic Center.

Nicole Fafard (East Setauket, N.Y.) led Canisius (3-10, 1-1 MAAC) for the second consecutive match in kills as the junior had 17 to go along with 13 digs for her third double-double in the last four matches. Brittany Gerde (Findlay, Ohio) had 12 kills and 26 assists while

Morgan Ammons (Findlay, Ohio) and Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) each had 10 kills.
Senior Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) led all players with 32 digs in the match and broke her own school record for digs in a four-game match.

“It's a disappointing loss against a hard-fighting and relentless Loyola squad,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “This type of match is what makes the conference exciting. There is no guarantee of which team is going to win or lose on any day.”

The teams played a closely contested game one, which saw no squad take more than a three-point advantage as Loyola won it with two straight points at the end. Canisius responded in game two by winning the first four points and never looking back.

Loyola (8-6, 2-0) used a 6-2 run to go up 17-12 in game three and never let Canisius get closer than four the rest of the way. The teams stayed close in game four with Loyola getting the run in the end, winning four straight points and turning a 24-23 lead into a 28-23 advantage.

Nina Camaioni and Karlee Woodward each had 12 kills for Siena who had four players with double-digit digs, led by 23 from Camaioni.

Canisius begins its conference road schedule next weekend, starting against Fairfield on Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.

Match Notes: Canisius dropped its first match to Loyola in the last five matches... The 17 kills by Fafard tied for the most in a match by a Canisius player this season while her 52 attempts were a season high... Stackhouse previously had 31 digs in a four-game match twice, last coming Nov. 18, 2006, against Manhattan.
