Fordham put together a fifth-game run to defeat the Canisius College volleyball team 18-30, 30-24, 30-26, 22-30, 15-8 Saturday night at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Canisius senior Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) set the school's all-time digs record in the second game against Fordham. Overall, Stackhouse had 20 digs against Fordham and has 1,558 in her career. The record was previously held by Erin Oveis with 1,546.
In both matches on Saturday, Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) led the Griffs in kills, getting 14 in the match against Fordham (4-3) while hitting a team-high .462. Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had 12 kills while Brittany Gerde (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 10.
Canisius (1-5) controlled the first game against Fordham to win by 12 before dropping the next two games to the Rams. In the second game, Fordham broke the game open with a 7-1 run to turn a 21-20 lead into a 28-22 advantage. The Rams rallied in the third game, turning a 19-13 deficit into a 25-24 lead that they never relinquished.
In game four, the Griffs used their block to force a decisive fifth game. Gerde had four block assists in the game while Domo had a block and two block assists. Lettow also had five kills on six swings in the game.
Fordham took control from the start in game five, winning the first three points and never letting the Griffs get closer than two the rest of the way.
The Rams had four players with double-digit kills, led by Christi Griffiths, who had 16 while Kailee May had 14.
“We're disappointed in the outcome, but our team showed improved maturity from our previous matches,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “That reminds us the great things we have to come this season.”
In the day's earlier match, the Griffs used the formula their opponents have applied this season and created big runs to defeat St. Francis (N.Y.) 30-19, 30-14, 30-13 Saturday afternoon in the Western New York Invitational at the Koessler Athletic Center to get their first win of the year.
Domo led Canisius with 10 kills on 16 attempts and had a .562 attack percentage. Michelle Godfrey (Tonwanda, N.Y.) had six kills while Lettow, Nicole Fafard (East Setuaket, N.Y.) and Gerde each had five kills for the Griffs.
In the first game, Canisius turned a 9-8 lead into a 15-9 advantage and never let the Terriers get closer than five. With the scored tied at 3-3 in game two, Canisius took control earlier by winning 11 of 12 points to go up 14-4. The Griffs waited a little longer in game three to gain the upper hand, holding an 11-9 lead. Then they won 19 of the last 21 points to close out the match and get their first win of 2007.
Godfrey led the team with one solo block and six block assists while Mary Curran (West Islip, N.Y.) had five block assists, Domo had four and Gerde had three.
Diana Colon had a team-high 10 kills for St. Francis (0-7) while Detelina Dimitrova and Jadelyn Castillo each had five kills for the Terriers.
Canisius plays its final match in the Western New York Invitational Sunday afternoon when it hosts West Virginia. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
Saturday Notes: Stackhouse set the record on a dig with the score 26-21 in the second game against the Rams... Domo has led the Griffs in kills in five of the six matches this season... After tying her career high with six block assists against St. Francis (N.Y.), Godfrey set a career high with seven against Fordham... The Griffs had 21 combined aces in the two matches on Saturday while having 14 in their previous four matches combined.
