MAAC 40th Year Celebration – Indoor Track Teams

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) will be celebrating its 40th anniversary throughout the 2020-21 academic year, continuing its mission to provide student-athletes the opportunity to succeed in both academics and athletics.

The 40th Anniversary Indoor Track and Field Team highlights some of the best student-athletes in MAAC history. MAAC Indoor Track and Field traces back to 1989, when Army swept the first MAAC Championship for both the men and women. Manhattan College leads the conference with 18 men's championships and 14 women's championships.

The MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships are set to return Feb. 20-21, 2021 at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.

The five former Griffs honored on the men's MAAC 40th Anniversary Team are Jeff Antolos '17, Tom Appenheimer '94, James Bialasik '02, Chad Maloy '14 and Cooper Roach '17.

The Canisius honorees for the women's MAAC 40th Anniversary Team are Heather (Whalen) Appenheimer '91, Allison Carr '01, Siobhan Quinn '19, Mary Beth Riley '91, and Kelly Thompson '01.

Men's Indoor Track Honorees
Jeff Antolos ran indoor track for four seasons and is the program's current record holder in the 5,000-meter event, set in 2017… Tom Appenheimer was a three-time All-MAAC honoree and graduated as the school's record holder in the 3K and 5K races. He was inducted into the College's Sports Hall of Fame in 2010… The school's record holder in the 55-meter and 200-meter indoor events, James Bialasik was a member of the indoor track program from 2000-02. He holds six of the top-25 times in the 200-meter event, and he also graduated from Canisius as the school's career leader in kickoff return yards as a member of the football team… Chad Maloy became the first Canisius male runner in more than a dozen years to qualify for the indoor IC4A Championships in 2014… The program's record holder in the indoor mile with a time of 4:07.83, Cooper Roach holds four of the top-five indoor mile times in program history, including the top three spots.

Women's Indoor Track Honorees
A MAAC champion in both indoor track and cross country, Heather (Whalen) Appenheimer graduated from Canisius as the program record holder in the 3K and 5K races. She was inducted into the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame in 2001… Allison Carr set the school record in the 1,000-meter race in 1998 at 2:56.59 – the only sub-3:00 time in the school's indoor track record book… One of the best female runners in school history, Siobhan Quinn holds the Canisius indoor track records for the 3K, 5K, and mile events. The only female All-Regional honoree in cross country, Quinn's success moved to the indoor track setting as well, highlighted by a fourth-place finish and an ECAC Championship qualifying time in the 5K in 2019… The first NCAA Woman of the Year honoree, Mary Beth Riley was a member of the school's record-setting 3,200-meter relay team at the 1990 MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. She was inducted into the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame in 2001… Kelly Thompson is one of the fastest female Griffs of all-time. She holds the school's record in the 55-meter event with a time of 7.46, set in 2001. In fact, she holds the top-12 times for the program in that race.
