Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Rider, 9-0

Box Score

Ryan Stekl led the Canisius baseball offense, tallying three doubles and three RBI and Andrew Sipowicz worked six scoreless innings, as the Blue and Gold completed the series sweep of Rider, 9-0, on Sunday. With the victory Canisius improves to 23-15 and 7-5 in the MAAC, while Rider drops to 16-19-1 and 8-7 in conference action.

The Griffs sprinkled nine runs through the contest, after a two-run rally in the bottom of the first, staked claim to a lead Canisius never relinquished.

Offense was on full disply at the Demske Sports Complex for the Blue and Gold as Canisius outhit Rider 16-6.

Stekl had a strong day, going 4-of-6 at the dish, including a trio of doubles and RBI. Canisius also had a pair of players record three hits, with Jake Lumley and Liam Wilson rapping out three apiece.

Aside from Stekl's three RBI, Mark McKenna also recorded a pair for the Canisius offense.

While the bats were swinging, the pitching kept Rider guessing, as Sipowicz improved to 3-2 on the season, working six frames, allowing just three hits and no runs and fanning four in the effort.

Zachary Sloan came on in relief and worked a pair of innings and yielded just two hits, while Jared Kennedy worked the final inning and allowed one hit but no runs.

Stekl got Canisius on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the first, while a walk with the bases loaded later in the frame, gave Canisius a 2-0 advantage.

With the score 4-0, Canisius added a pair of runs in the seventh inning thanks to a Nick Capitano RBI single, while a sacrifice fly by Joseph Preziuso made it 6-0.

A three-hit, three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth capped the scoring for the Griffs.

Canisius has a pair of midweek contests this coming week, hosting Youngstown State on Tuesday, at 3 p.m., while the team travels to Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls, N.Y., for a date with the Purple Eagles. The contest against Niagara will be considered a non-conference contest.
