BUFFALO, N.Y. – For the second time this season, the Canisius baseball team extended its winning streak to eight games on Tuesday, as the squad bested Cornell in a mid-week doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs edged the Big Red 1-0 in game one, and 6-4 in game two. With the wins the Blue and Gold improve to 23-18, while Cornell dropped to 13-21.

GAME ONE:

Freshman Andrew Kneussle pitched a gem in the first game, as he worked five scoreless innings, and yielded just three hits, while striking out five as he improved to 3-2 this season.

The trio of Tyler Smith, Michael Ginther and Iannick Remillard combined for the next two innings, and kept the shutout intact. Remillard worked the final frame and set down all three batters he faced, with one strikeout, to record his 12th save of the year, breaking the single-season record for saves in a campaign.

Offense was hard to come by for both squads as the two teams combined for just nine hits. Canisius recorded six in the game, while Cornell managed just three.

Jake Lumley led the offense in the contest, accounting for three of the Griffs' 9 hits in the game. Liam Wilson was the only member of the Blue and Gold to drive in a run in the game, as the newcomer this season went 1-of-2 at the plate, recorded one RBI and one walk.

That run came early in the game, as Lumley got the offense started with a double in his first at bat. Following a Ryan Stekl put out, Wilson came up and singled to left-center, as Lumley came around to score the game's only run.

GAME TWO:

Canisius offense got going in game two, as the squad scored five runs in the first two innings, and survived a Cornell rally in the fourth inning, to defeat the Big Red, 6-4.

Andrew Sipowicz got the start and worked three innings and allowed one hit and three runs (two earned) in the no-decision. Mike Elwood came on and relieved Sipowicz to get the win, throwing two frames, allowing three hits and one run (unearned) as he improved to 2-4 in 2016.

Aaron Casper came on in the sixth an held Cornell to a scoreless frame, and Remillard came back on in game two, to record his second save of the day, allowing a hit but getting out of the inning with just 11 pitches. After recording his 13th save of the season, he is now second in division I baseball in saves this season.

Six different Griffs recorded hits in the contest, with Wilson pacing the team with two. The big damage of the game came off the bat of Joseph Preziuso who notched three RBI and one hit in the game.

Most of the damage as done in the the first two innings for Canisius as the squad put together a three run, four hit rally in the bottom of the first and a two run, two hit rally in the bottom of the second.

Collin McGee got into trouble earlyin the first inning, as he loaded the bases thanks to two hits and a walk. He then plunked Massa to score the game's first run. Prezisuo capped the scoring singling up the middle to drive in Wilson and Stekl.

In the second an RBI double by Stekl brought in Lumley to make the it 4-0, while a run-down on a steal attempt by Jack Massa allowed Stekl to score before the tag was applied, to make it 5-0.

The Big Red got to the Griffs in the fourth as a three-hit rally turned into four runs, but the Blue and Gold outlasted Cornell, 6-4.

Canisius now heads into the bye week of their MAAC schedule, as the squad will take on Youngstown State for a three-game set beginning Friday, with a single game on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
