Baseball Completes Series Sweep Over Iona

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Seven pitchers combined for a shutout in Canisius Baseball's game three victory over Iona at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday, as the squad defeated the Gaels 10-0. With the win Canisius completed the three-game sweep, and improved to 20-18 overall and 11-4 in MAAC play, while Iona dropped to 8-28 and 2-10 in conference action.

Zachary Sloan started the parade of pitchers as he worked an effective 3.1 innings, and allowed just one hit in the 13 batters faced. Andrew Sipowicz was next on for the Griffs as he worked an inning and yielded two hits.

Following Michael Ginther, was Tyler Smith, who took to the mound and threw 2.1 innings and earned the win, yielding just two hits and fanning a pair in the outing. With the win, Smith improved to 5-1 on the year.

Jared Kennedy, Alvin Vega, and Mike Elwood, combined for the final two innings, as the squad held Iona just five hits and 13 baserunners total.

On offense the Blue and Gold rapped out 10 hits in the contest, with Anthony Massicci once again proving to be a sparkplug at the top of the lineup. The senior went 2-of-4 from the dish, tallying a double and a triple in the game.

Jake Lumley led the team in RBI as he drilled a two-run homerun over the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Canisius didn't wait long to get on the board, as a Massicci walk in the bottom of the first inning turned into a run when Liam Wilson drilled a single to centerfield, as the Griffs went up 1-0 early.

With the score 3-0, the Blue and Gold opened up the game with a four-run bottom of the fifth, thanks to three-hit rally.

Wilson got the rally started as he reached base thanks to a hit-by-pitch. Jack Massa came up next and smacked a single to left field to move Wilson to second. Adam Tricarico walked to load the bases, before Iona brought Andrew Pucillo to the mound. Jake Walter pinch hit for Mark McKenna following the pitching change and made his at-bat count, singling up the middle to score Massa and Wilson. Next up was Alex O'Donnell and he also singled to center field to drive in Cyrus Senior (who pinch ran for Walter) and Tricarico to cap the scoring.

In sixth, Lumley provided some fireworks as he launched a homerun over the right field fence to score himself and Massicci to make it 9-0. The Blue and Gold notched another run in eighth, as the squad went on to record the 10-0 victory.

Canisius prepares for a busy week, as the squad takes on Cornell in a doubleheader on Tuesday (beginning at 3 p.m.) and then heads to Youngstown, Ohio to face the Penguins in a three game set beginning on Saturday and concluding on Sunday.
