Baseball Downs West Virginia, 9-0

Box Score

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Canisius baseball team bested West Virginia for the second-straight day on Wednesday, as the squad defeated the Mountaineers 9-0. With the win the Blue and Gold extended its win-streak to eight games, and improved 11-13 overall. West Virginia dropped to 12-10 overall.

The Griffs scored four runs between the fourth and sixth innings, before a five-run output in the top of the eighth sealed the deal for the Golden Griffins.

Freshman Nolan Hunt earned his first win of the year as he worked four innings and yielded just one hit during his outing. The Griffs staff as a whole surrendered just three hits to West Virginia.

Alvin Vega and Jared Kennedy both pitched a pair of innings and allowed on hit each, while Andrew Sipowicz threw the final frame of the game and walked one batter but held WVU without a hit or a run.

Anthony Massicci proved to be the offensive catalyst as he went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI on a homerun. Ryan Stekl  led the team with RBI as he notched a two-RBI single in the top of the eighth. Tim Kensinger also notched a pair of hits for the Blue and Gold.

The Griffs' biggest output of the night took place in the eighth inning, as the squad exploded for five runs in the frame. Christ Conley started the rally as he singled to center field to drive in Liam Wilson. A walk with the bases loaded scored Massicci, with a walk to Jake Lumley scored Cyrus Senior to make it 7-0. Stekl provided the knockout blow as he singled through the left side, as Joseph Preziuso and Jake Walter came around and scored to help Canisius to the 9-0 win.

The Blue and Gold now come home to face Siena for its second-straight home weekend. The Griffs will host a doubleheader beginning at noon on Friday, while Canisius takes on the Saints for the finale on Saturday. Game time is slated for around 3 p.m. following a men's lacrosse game, which begins at 11 a.m.
