Box Score 2 WILSON, N.C. – The Canisius Baseball team earned a doubleheader split against Fordham on Saturday, as the squad took game one 5-4, but dropped the second contest 5-2. With the split, Canisius improves to 2-5 while Fordham also improves to 2-4.
GAME ONE:
In the first game the Griffs got off to a strong start, scoring three runs in the first three innings, and was able to fend off the Rams for the full seven innings, defeating Fordham, 5-4.
Josh Shepley got the start for the Blue and Gold, as the junior starter worked 4.1 innings, yielded just two hits and three runs (one earned) and fanned five batters in the no-decision.
Nolan Hunt came on to work one third of an inning allowing one hit in the two batters he faced, while Tyler Smith came on and pitched 2.1 innings, allowed one unearned run and struck out three to improve to 1-0 on the year.
Defense was the name of the game in the first contest, as the teams combined for just eight hits, with the Griffs edging the Rams 5-3.
Tim Kensinger continued to be productive for the Blue and Gold, finishing the first game with two hits in four at bats, and notching one RBI. Meanwhile Christ Conley and Liam Wilson also recorded RBI for the Blue and Gold.
For Fordham Ryan McNally. Mark Donadio and Justin Bardwell were responsible for one RBI apiece, as McNally and Donadio accounted for two of the team's three hits.
GAME TWO:
In the second game, the Griffs scored a run early and looked to be cruising right along, holding that one-run lead, however the Rams plated five runs between the fifth and sixth innings, as Fordham bested the Griffs, 5-2.
J.P. Stevenson got the call on the hill and dropped to 0-2 this season, as he pitched 5.2 innings, yielded just three hits but allowed four runs (two earned) in the losing effort. The second-year hurler did record five strikeouts to conclude the game.
Andrew Sipowicz came on in relief and pitched 1.1 innings, allowed two hits and one run in his outing.
The duo of Ben Greenburg and Anthony DiMeglio combined to hold the Griffs to just four hits in the game, two runs.
Greenburg went six full innings and surrendered just four hits and two runs, one earned as he improved to 2-0 this season.
DiMeglio came on to pitch the final frame and struck out two of the three batters he faced to record his first save of the season.
The offense was sparse for the Blue and Gold, as Jake Lumley was responsible for both RBI in the contest, while four different batters recorded hits in the contest for Canisius.
McNally had a day for Fordham as he concluded his afternoon with two hits and one RBI as he was the only player for the Rams to have a multi-hit day.
The Griffs conclude its series with the Rams with a final game on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. its southern road swing continues following that contest, as the squad gears up to face Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. March 4-5.
