Box Score PORT ST. LUCIE FLA. – The Canisius Baseball program wrapped up its opening-season series with a 9-3 loss to No. 15 Michigan on Sunday. The Wolverines scored five runs in the first two innings to set the course of the game, as the Griffs dropped to 0-4 and Michigan improved to 4-0.
Andrew Kneussle made his first start for the Blue and Gold and was chased early by the Wolverines. The Plattsburgh, N.Y. native pitched 1.1 innings and got touched for five hits and five runs, with four earned. Kneussle did fan two in the outing.
Canisius also got a look at several other new pitchers in the Griffs' arsenal as Nolan Hunt came on in relief, pitched three innings and yielded just one hit, while Andrew Sipowicz pitched 1.2 innings and allowed four hits and one earned run.
Iannick Remillard finished the game as he threw two innings and got roughed up for six hits, and two earned runs.
The Michigan pitching staff held the Canisius offense in check, as Anthony Massicci, Tim Kensinger and Adam Tricarico were the only Griffs to record hits in the game.
Cameron Benedetti got the start for the Wolverines and threw just one inning, but did fan two in the frame.
Oliver Jaskie was the pitcher of record, throwing six innings, allowing three hits and yielding one run (unearned).
Michigan staked claim to the early lead putting the Blue and Gold in a hole, scoring two in the first and three runs in the bottom of the second.
Liam Wilson got Canisius on the board as John Conti reached on a fielding error but the Wolverines answered back in the bottom of the fifth, plating two runs to go up 7-1.
A fielding error by Johnny Slater brought both Mark McKenna and Kensinger came around to score but Michigan held onto its advantage, winning 9-3.
The Griffs will be back in action next weekend as the squad settles in for a four game set against Fordham Feb. 26-28. The games will be played in Wilson, N.C.
