Baseball Drops Spring Break Finale In Extras

The Canisius College baseball team lost the series finale 8-7 in 10 innings to the University of Dayton at Time Warner Cable Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Canisius splits its four games in Dayton and concludes the Spring Break trip with a 9-12 overall record.

Sophomore Jose Torralba went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while freshman Connor Panas was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Senior Drew Pettit hit his second homer of the season and had three RBI while junior Chris Gruarin was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Griffs built a 4-0 lead, scoring in the second on an RBI double from Panas. The Griffs added a second run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Pettit. Canisius doubled its lead in the fifth, scoring both runs with two outs on a two-RBI single from Panas. Dayton (6-12) used two solo homers in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Canisius lead in half, but the Griffs came right back in the top of the seventh and pushed the lead back to four runs on a two-run homer from Pettit.

Dayton would tie the game in the seventh, taking advantage of three Canisius errors, three walks and a wild pitch. After freshman Rohn Pierce walked the first two batters, he was relieved by redshirt junior Nathan Linseman. A single to left ended up scoring a run after a fielding error by sophomore Jesse Kelso. After an RBI groundout made it 6-4, Pettit committed two errors on the next play, allowing the fifth Dayton run to score. The Flyers tied the game later in the inning on a wild pitch from senior Alex Tufts.

Canisius took a 7-6 lead in the ninth when Gruarin led off with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a fly out. Pinch hitter Jimmy Luppens came through with the two-out, go-ahead, RBI single to give Canisius the one-run lead. Dayton would get a leadoff walk to Josh Jeffery off senior Ryan Fennell in the ninth, move Jeffery to second with a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout. Brian Blasik then tied the game with a two-out, RBI single.

The Flyers used a leadoff double from C.J. Gillman and a walk-off single from A.J. Ryan to win the game in the 10th.

Fennell (0-2) took the loss, allowing two runs in one-plus innings of work. Pierce allowed four runs on three hits, walked two and struck out four in six innings.

Canisius returns to the Demske Sports Complex for nine of its next 10 games. The Golden Griffins start conference play against Siena on Saturday with first pitch for the doubleheader set for 2 p.m.
