The
Canisius College baseball team split a doubleheader at Siena College on
Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won the opener 8-7 in 10 innings before
the Saints had a walk-off 3-2 win in the second game. Canisius is now 20-26 overall
and 8-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Junior
Drew Pettit had four hits in each
game, going 8-for-9 with three RBI. Senior Brian
Burton was 4-for-7 with three walks and three RBI. Senior Sean Jamieson scored four runs and had
two stolen bases. Senior Will Chomicki
had three hits out of the leadoff spot for the Griffs.
Canisius
jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Jamieson reached on a two-out error, stole
second and scored on a double from Burton. The Saints scored four runs in the
bottom of the first to chase Canisius starter Billy Martin. Dan Paolini had an RBI single, Ken Kirshner had a
two-RBI single and Adam Guinn had an RBI single as the Saints batted around to
take a 4-1 lead.
The
Griffs got one back in the top of the third as sophomore Chris Gruarin reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third
after a Jamieson single and the second Siena error of the game. Gruarin
eventually scored on an RBI single from Pettit. The Saints regained a three-run
lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Vincent
Citro.
Canisius
scored five runs during the next three innings to take a 7-5 lead. Jamieson
reached on an error to lead off the fifth, Burton walked and Pettit singled to
load the bases with no outs. After an RBI groundout from freshman Jose Torralba, senior Andrew Russo had a two-RBI single to
tie the game at 5-5. The Griffs took the lead in the sixth as Jamieson walked
with one out, moved to second on a groundout and scored on an RBI single from
Pettit. Canisius scored an insurance run in the seventh when Russo led off with
a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a groundout and
scored on a two-out, RBI single from Chomicki.
Siena
(21-26, 9-8 MAAC) tied the game in the bottom of the eighth as the first two
batters reached to chase redshirt junior Tim Seil. After a walk from reliever Josh Marshall loaded the bases, sophomore Jordan Cave got a strikeout and a fielder's choice with a force out
at home for the first two outs of the inning. However, Cave issued a walk and a
hit by pitch to force home two runs and tie the game. Redshirt senior Chris Cox came into the game and got
Paolini to strike out for the final out of the inning.
Canisius
scored the winning run in the 10th as Gruarin singled with one out
and eventually scored on a two-out, RBI single from Burton. The Saints loaded
the bases in the 10th on two walks and a hit by pitch. But Cox (1-5)
struck out Mike Fish to end the game and pick up his first win of the season.
In
the second game, Canisius took the 1-0 lead in the top of the third with a
two-out rally as Jamieson was hit by pitch, stole second and scored on an RBI
single from Burton. The Saints tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an
RBI double from Paolini. Canisius retook a one-run lead in the top of the fifth
as Torralba led off with a single, moved to third on a single from Burton and
scored on an RBI single from Pettit that put Canisius up 2-1.
The
Saints tied the game in the sixth when Kevin Quaranto hit a one-out solo homer
to right to tie the game at 2-2. After two outs to start the seventh, Pettit
singled and Gruarin doubled to put runners at second and third. However, Russo
struck out to end the rally. William Cardona led off the
bottom of the seventh with a solo homer to right, giving the Saints the
walk-off win.
Redshirt
senior Shane Davis (4-5) took the
loss, allowing three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out three. Ryan
Poplawski (4-3) earned the run by getting the final out of the seventh. Justin
Brantley went 6.2 innings for Siena, allowing two runs on nine hits, walking
three and striking out five.
Canisius
and Siena will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch set
for noon.
Notes: With
the game one win, Canisius snapped a seven-game losing streak in one-run games...
Cox didn't allow a run for the sixth straight relief appearance (10 innings)...
The six innings of relief pitched by Seil was the longest relief appearance by
a Griff since Matt Weber went six innings against Appalachian State on March 1,
2008... The one-inning start was the shortest of Martin's career... Chomicki's
two-out, RBI single gives him seven RBI in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring
position and two outs this season and 30 RBI in 31 such at-bats the last two
seasons... Burton had two hits in each game, giving him 58 career multi-hit games...
Burton also moved into fourth in career games played (194)... Marshall made his
65th career appearance, tying him with Aaron Boag for third all-time...
The eight hits on the day raised Pettit's average 30 points... Torralba extended
his hitting streak to seven games, the longest active streak on the team.
