The
Canisius College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader at Le Moyne on
Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 1-0 and 5-2 to fall to 19-25
overall on the season.
In
the first game, Le Moyne (20-27) scored the game's only run in the fourth as Matt
Marra led off with a single, moved up to second and third on passed balls and
scored on a two-out RBI single from Brian Stinson.
The
Griffs got the tying run to third base with one out in the fifth but couldn't
get the ball out of the infield as freshman Ryan Coppinger struck out looking and sophomore Chris Gruarin grounded out. Canisius had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth but
senior Sean Jamieson was thrown out
at the play on a fielder's choice. The Griffs also loaded the bases later in
the inning but couldn't get the tying run home as freshman Jose Torralba struck out as Canisius left seven runners
on base in the game.
Junior
Alex Tufts (3-2) took the loss,
allowing one unearned run in six innings. Tufts yielded four hits and one walk
while striking out five.
In
the second game, Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as senior Will Chomicki reached on a one-out
single, moved to second on catcher's interference, advanced to third on a fly out
and scored on an error. The Dolphins then tied the game in the bottom of the
fourth on a sacrifice fly from Vincent Redmond. Le Moyne took the lead with a
three-run bottom of the fifth as Marra and Brett Botsford each reached on
one-out walks from junior Ryan Fennell.
Ryan Mahoney followed with a double off senior Josh Marhsall to score Marra while Don Schaaf scored Botsford and
Mahoney with a two-RBI single.
The
Griffs added a run in the top of the sixth when Jamieson led off with a walk, moved
to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Drew Pettit. Le Moyne regained the
three-run lead with an RBI single from Pat Wiese.
Redshirt
junior Tim Seil made his first
career start for the Griffs and went 2.1 shutout innings. Redshirt sophomore Nathan Linseman allowed
one run in his two innings of work. Fennell (1-2) took the loss while redshirt
senior Chris Cox got the final two
outs of the sixth.
Canisius
returns to conference play for a three-game series at Siena this weekend. Game
time for Saturday's doubleheader in Loudonville is set for noon.
Notes: In his
last four starts, Tufts has a 1.35 ERA in 20 innings pitched. The junior has
walked three batters and has 12 strikeouts in that stretch... Canisius is now
4-12 in one-run games this season, having lost the last seven games... Chomicki
appeared as a pinch runner in the first game and batted in the leadoff spot in
the second game, his first action since March 23, at Kentucky... Cox didn't allow
a run for the fifth straight relief appearance... Linseman allowed a run for the
first time in seven appearances while Marshall allowed a run for the first time
in six appearances... Seil has allowed one run in his last five innings pitched... Torralba extended his
hitting streak to five games... Canisius has scored three or fewer runs in nine
consecutive games while the pitching staff has a earned run average of 3.28
during that stretch.
