Baseball Loses Both Ends Of Doubleheader At Le Moyne

The Canisius College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader at Le Moyne on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 1-0 and 5-2 to fall to 19-25 overall on the season.

In the first game, Le Moyne (20-27) scored the game's only run in the fourth as Matt Marra led off with a single, moved up to second and third on passed balls and scored on a two-out RBI single from Brian Stinson.

The Griffs got the tying run to third base with one out in the fifth but couldn't get the ball out of the infield as freshman Ryan Coppinger struck out looking and sophomore Chris Gruarin grounded out. Canisius had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth but senior Sean Jamieson was thrown out at the play on a fielder's choice. The Griffs also loaded the bases later in the inning but couldn't get the tying run home as freshman Jose Torralba struck out as Canisius left seven runners on base in the game.

Junior Alex Tufts (3-2) took the loss, allowing one unearned run in six innings. Tufts yielded four hits and one walk while striking out five.

In the second game, Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as senior Will Chomicki reached on a one-out single, moved to second on catcher's interference, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on an error. The Dolphins then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Vincent Redmond. Le Moyne took the lead with a three-run bottom of the fifth as Marra and Brett Botsford each reached on one-out walks from junior Ryan Fennell. Ryan Mahoney followed with a double off senior Josh Marhsall to score Marra while Don Schaaf scored Botsford and Mahoney with a two-RBI single.

The Griffs added a run in the top of the sixth when Jamieson led off with a walk, moved to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Drew Pettit. Le Moyne regained the three-run lead with an RBI single from Pat Wiese.

Redshirt junior Tim Seil made his first career start for the Griffs and went 2.1 shutout innings. Redshirt sophomore Nathan Linseman allowed one run in his two innings of work. Fennell (1-2) took the loss while redshirt senior Chris Cox got the final two outs of the sixth.

Canisius returns to conference play for a three-game series at Siena this weekend. Game time for Saturday's doubleheader in Loudonville is set for noon.
