The
Canisius College baseball team scored in four of the first five innings and
defeated Youngstown State 11-3 at the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday
afternoon. Canisius wins its third straight game to improve to 17-18 on the
season.
Senior
Sean Jamieson and freshman Jose Torralba each had three hits on
the day with Torralba scoring four runs and Jamieson scoring twice. Sophomore Chris Gruarin went 2-for-3, including
two triples, with three runs scored and three RBI.
Seven
Canisius pitchers saw action for the Griffs on the day, with each pitcher
recording at least one strikeout. Junior Alex
Tufts (3-0) started and picked up the win by allowing one hit and one walk
in three shutout innings. Redshirt sophomore Nathan Linseman, redshirt junior Tim Seil, senior Josh
Marshall and freshman Jon
Fitzsimmons followed by each throwing a scoreless inning of relief.
Sophomore
Jordan Cave made his second
appearance on the season and recorded four strikeouts in his inning of work,
allowing three unearned runs. Redshirt senior Chris Cox struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth
to finish the game.
Youngtown
State (8-27) had a chance to score in the top of the first as Jeremy Banks
worked a two-out walk and stole second. On a groundball up the middle from Joe
Iacobucci, Torralba dove to his right to keep the ball on the infield. Banks
never stopped running as he rounded third and was thrown out at the plate by
Torralba.
Canisius
pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third, sending 11 batters to the plate. Torralba
led off with a walk and scored on a triple from Gruarin. Youngstown State
starter Blake Aquadro then issued four straight walks, forcing in one run. RBI
singles from senior Nat Barone and
freshman Ryan Coppinger gave
Canisius the 6-0 lead.
The
Griffs added a run in the fourth on an RBI single from freshman Shane Zimmer. Canisius scored two more
runs in the fifth on an RBI triple from Gruarin and RBI double from Jamieson.
Freshman Jimmy Luppens had a two-RBI
double in the seventh to give Canisius an 11-0 lead.
Canisius
plays its next 12 games away from home, starting with this weekend's three-game
series at first-place Manhattan. The teams will play a split doubleheader on
Friday, with game times of 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Notes: Canisius
has won 11 of its last 15 games... Cave pitched for the first time since Feb. 26,
at Tennessee... Marshall has 10 strikeouts in his last six innings pitched...
Fourteen Canisius position players recorded a plate appearance in the game... Burton and
Jamieson each extended their hitting streaks to seven games... Cox has thrown six
scoreless innings of relief in his last three appearances... Gruarin matched the program record for triples in a game with two, tying Jeff Grabowski from April 17, 1978, against Niagara County Community College.
