Le
Moyne College scored twice in the seventh and once in the ninth to defeat the
Canisius College baseball team 3-2 at the Demske Sports Complex on Thursday
afternoon. The Golden Griffins fall to 14-18 overall.
Canisius
took the early 1-0 lead as junior Drew
Pettit beat out an infield single and freshman Jose Torralba singled up the middle to get two runners on with no
outs. After Pettit was thrown out at third on an attempted sacrifice bunt,
Torralba and sophomore Frank Polino
executed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Freshman Shane
Zimmer followed with an RBI grounder to short to score Torralba.
Both
teams ran into outs on the bases throughout the game. Canisius had two runners
in scoring position in the third when senior Brian Burton lined out to left field. Zack Wiley would throw out
sophomore Chris Gruarin at the plate
to keep it a 1-0 game. Le Moyne had runners at first and third with one out in
the fourth. The Dolphins attempted a double steal as Polino threw down to
second base. Shortstop Sean Jamieson
threw right back to Polino at the plate, and the catcher tagged out Brett
Botsford to preserve the Canisius lead.
Canisius
added a run in the sixth when Burton had a one-out double, moved to third on a
grounder from Pettit and scored on Torralba's second single of the game. Junior
Alex Tufts had retired seven
straight batters going into the seventh inning before Botsford led off with a
double, and Ryan Mahoney hit a two-run homer into the centerfield bullpen to tie
the game at 2-2.
Canisius
had runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the seventh but wasn't
able to get the go-ahead run across the plate. Le Moyne pitcher Mike Anarumo
(2-1) got Gruarin to fly out to shallow left and hold the runners for the
second out of the inning. Freshman Ralph
Alloco would attempt to steal second but got caught in a rundown for the
third out of the inning.
Jamieson
led off the eighth with an eight-pitch walk and stole second on the next pitch.
The senior shortstop would be caught stealing as Anarumo threw behind Jamieson
and got him in a rundown for the first out of the inning. Le Moyne (12-22) took
the lead in the ninth as Botsford drew a leadoff walk from junior Ryan Fennell, moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt and stole third. Don Schaaf would single through the right side
on the first pitch from redshirt sophomore Nathan
Linseman, scoring Botsford for what proved to be the winning run.
Canisius
mounted a rally in the ninth as Polino worked a one-out walk and pinch hitter Kevin Whitehead drew a four-pitch walk
to get runners at first and second. Freshman Ryan Coppinger lined a 1-1 pitch to left but it was right at Wiley
for the second out of the inning. Ed Kohout struck out Alloco on three pitches
to close out the game.
Fennell
(1-1) took the loss, allowing one run in his one inning of work. Tufts went 7.1
innings, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five.
Linseman and redshirt senior Chris Cox
each got an out in the ninth for the Griffs.
Canisius
continues its homestand this weekend with a three-game series against Saint
Peter's at the Demske Sports Complex. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader
is set for noon.
