The
Canisius College baseball team split a doubleheader at George Washington University
on Sunday, winning the opener 8-1 and falling 3-2 in 13 innings in the second
game. The Golden Griffins take two of three games in the series and are now
14-17 on the season, having won eight of their last 11 games.
In
the first game, Canisius scored twice in the top of the first and never
relinquished the lead. Freshman Jose
Torralba led off the game with a walk and scored two batters later on the
first of two home runs in the game from senior Sean Jamieson. After the Colonials scored once in the bottom of the
third, Canisius took control of the game by scoring three runs in the sixth and
seventh innings.
Freshman
Shane Zimmer had a one-out single in
the sixth and after a single from Jamieson, senior Brian Burton followed with an RBI double to score Zimmer. Sophomore
Chris Gruarin had a two-out, two-RBI
single to score Jamieson and Burton to make it 5-1. Canisius took advantage of
an extra out in the seventh as sophomore Frank
Polino led off with a single. After two Canisius strikeouts, George Washington
appeared to get out of the inning, but senior Nat Barone reached on an error. Jamieson took
advantage with a three-run homer to right center to give Canisius the 8-1 lead.
Canisius
used a trio of pitchers in the game. Sophomore Scott Whitehead started and went three innings, allowing one run
and striking out three. Senior Josh
Marshall (2-0) earned the win by throwing four shutout innings and striking
out five. Freshman Garrett Cortright
closed out the game with two shutout innings, allowing just one hit.
George
Washington (10-23) took the lead in the second game by scoring two runs in the
bottom of the second. Canisius tied the game in the top of the fourth as
Jamieson, Burton and junior Drew Pettit
put together consecutive one-out singles to score the first run. After Gruarin laid
down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third, senior Andrew Russo drew a walk to load the
bases. Freshman Jimmy Luppens then
worked a seven-pitch walk to force home a run and tie the game at 2-2.
George
Washington's next threat came in the seventh after a leadoff double and
sacrifice bunt put a runner at third with one out. Redshirt senior Chris Cox came into the game to relieve
starter Shane Davis. A hit by pitch
and infield single loaded the bases with one out. Cox would get then two
groundouts, one a forceout at home, to keep the game tied at 2-2.
The
Griffs had their best chance in the top of the ninth as Gruarin led off with a
single, stole second and moved to third on a grounder. Canisius couldn't get
the ball out of the infield as Luppens grounded out to first and freshman Ryan Coppinger struck out to end the
threat.
The
Colonials loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the tenth, but Cox got
a forceout at the plate and a strikeout to extend the game. Canisius would get
the go-ahead run to second in the 11th but was unable to capitalize.
The Colonials won the game in the 13th as they put together three straight
one-out hits, including the game-winning, walk-off single from Jordan Berry to
win 3-2.
Redshirt
junior Tim Seil (1-1) took the loss,
allowing one run on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. Davis allowed two runs
and five hits while walking none and striking out five in 6.1 innings. Cox threw
4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits, walking four and striking
out seven.
Canisius
returns home for a six-game homestand starting on Thursday, when the Golden
Griffins host Le Moyne. First pitch at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 4
p.m.
