Setting
a number of school records, the Canisius College baseball team defeated
Morehead State University 32-17 on Tuesday afternoon in Allen, Ky. The Golden
Griffins improve to 6-13 on the season.
Senior
Sean Jamieson hit for the cycle,
going 5-for-7 with four runs scored, two home runs and nine RBI - breaking his
own school-record of eight RBI set two times last season. Freshman Ralph Alloco set a program record with
six hits, also recording four runs and six RBI. The 32 runs scored by the
Griffs break the program record of 28 runs set during the 1957 season.
Canisius
batted around three times in the game and also sent eight batters to the plate
in the sixth inning and seven batters to the plate in the seventh and ninth
innings. Morehead State held a 3-1 lead after two innings, getting two runs in
the first and one in the second.
The
Griffs then scored 19 consecutive runs - posting eight in the third, seven in
the fifth and four in the sixth. Canisius scored six of its eight runs in the
third inning with two outs, including a stretch of five straight hits capped by
a three-run homer from sophomore Chris Gruarin
that put Canisius ahead 9-3. Canisius scored seven runs in the fifth, six of
them being unearned. Alloco had a two-RBI single, Jamieson had an RBI single
and senior Brian Burton had a grand
slam to center to put Canisius up 16-3. The Griffs scored four more unearned
runs in the sixth, including a bases-clearing triple from Jamieson to build a
20-3 lead.
The
Eagles (3-18) scored eight runs (five unearned) in the bottom half of the sixth
to make it a 20-11 game. After Canisius scored two in the top of the seventh,
Morehead State scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the score
22-16 after seven innings.
The
Griffs broke the game open again with an eight-run eighth inning. Jamieson led
off the inning with a homer, completing the cycle, and also hit a three-run
homer later in the inning. Alloco had an RBI single, senior Will Chomicki drew a bases-loaded walk
and freshman Ryan Coppinger had a
two-RBI single in the inning as well. The Griffs also added two runs in the
ninth to close out the scoring.
Junior
Alex Tufts (1-0) made his first
start of the season. Tufts went five innings, allowing six hits and three runs
to pick up the win. Redshirt junior Tim
Seil allowed one run in two innings of relief while freshman John DiMura made his collegiate debut
and retired the final two batters of the game.
Canisius
continues non-conference play on Wednesday, when the Golden Griffins play at
the University of Kentucky. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Cliff Hagen
Stadium.
Notes:
According to WarrenNolan.com, the 32 runs scored are the second-highest total
posted by a Division I team this season (James Madison scored 37 on Feb. 18).
The 49 runs scored are the highest-scoring came on the season... Canisius also
set a program record with 28 hits on the day, breaking the mark of 23 set at
Delaware State on March 25, 2008... Seven previous Griffs had five hits in a game
before Alloco set the record with six hits... Of the 13 Canisius batters to
record a plate appearance in the game, 11 scored at least one run, 11 had at
least one hit and 10 had at least one RBI... Jamieson is the first Griff to hit two home runs in the same inning since Ian Choy in the seventh inning at Fairfield on May 9, 2009... The cycle by Jamieson was the first by a Golden Griffin since Kevin Glover on March 12, 1996, against Marist — a span of 715 games.
