BOSTON - Host Boston University shot 50 percent from the
field and 41.7 percent from 3-point range in the game's final 20 minutes, where
senior John Holland and junior Darryl Partin combined to score 38 of the
Terriers' 41 second-half points as BU defeated Canisius College 70-62 Saturday
afternoon in the Agganis Arena in the 2011 Sears BracketBuster game. Boston
University has now won six straight to improve to 16-13 on the year, while the
Golden Griffins dropped their third straight while falling to 13-14 on the
season.
For Canisius, senior Elton
Frazier scored a team-high 16 points to go with eight rebounds, two blocks
and two steals, while fellow senior Greg
Logins added 13 points and six rebounds in the loss. Sophomore Gaby Belardo chipped in 12 points and
four assists for the Blue and Gold, with senior Robert Goldsberry coming off the bench to record eight points and
three assists.
Holland, who entered the game as the America East
Conference's leading scorer with his 19.2 points per game scoring average,
scored a game-high 28 points, with 23 of those coming in the second stanza.
Partin, a junior transfer from La Salle, ended the contest with 20 points after
scoring 15 points in the final 20 minutes. For the game, the Terriers shot 44
percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point land and 76.2 percent from the
free-throw line, highlighted by the fact that the squad went 9-for-11 from the
charity stripe in the game's final 3:03.
The Griffs took a 32-29 lead into the locker room at
halftime after the Blue and Gold held the Terriers to just one field goal over
the final 7:55 of the first half. In the opening moments of the second half,
Canisius jumped out to a five-point lead at 34-29 after Frazier slammed home
career dunk No. 83, but then Holland and Partin took over, as they scored
Boston University's next 29 points over a span of 14:04. Partin knotted the
game at 38-38 3:25 into the second half, but Belardo put the Griffs back up
three at 41-38 a minute later after he hit a trey from the deep wing. The game
went back and forth for the next 5:05 as neither team led by more than two
points, but with the score reading 53-51 in favor of Boston, freshman guard
D.J. Irving drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 7:55 to put the
Terriers up 56-51. Canisius' next six points were scored by Goldsberry before
Holland and Partin scored back-to-back buckets, followed by a free-throw from
Partin, that put the Terriers up 63-57 with 3:03 remaining.
Down the stretch, Boston University did not make a field
goal for the final 3:03, but put nine points on the board thanks to six
different trips to the charity stripe, which was enough to keep the Griffs at
an arm's length in the game's final minutes. Canisius finished the game
shooting 40.8 percent from the field and 83,3 percent from the free-throw line,
but the Terriers were able to turn 14 Canisius turnovers into 15 points on the
scoreboard.
"I give them credit, they are a good team and they made a
bunch of shots today," Canisius head coach Tom
Parrotta said. "They didn't make a lot of lay-ups, they only scored 14
points in the paint, but when they needed a basket, Holland or Partin knocked
it down. We did a good job keeping them off balance by changing defense and
working hard on not giving them open looks, but those guys were able to elevate
just enough to get tough shots off and that was the difference."
After four-straight on the road, Canisius will return home
for the final two regular-season games of the season, starting Friday, Feb. 25,
when the Blue and Gold hosts Manhattan. Game time in the Koessler Athletic
Center is set for 7 p.m.
