Baseball Advances to Championship Round by defeating Manhattan

FISHKILL, N.Y. - Canisius scored two runs in the seventh inning on RBI-singles by junior Will Chomicki and senior Perry Silverman, and senior reliever Andrew Van'tWout earned his fifth win of the year as the Golden Griffins defeated Manhattan 6-5 in the second elimination of the 2010 MAAC Baseball Championship at Dutchess Stadium. The win allows Canisius (39-20) to advance to the championship round of the tournament, where the Blue and Gold will need to beat Rider twice to earn the conference's automatic bid into next weekend's NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the seventh, Chomicki put the Griffs ahead for good with a base hit to right that allowed Shayne Willson to score from third. Moments later, Silverman roped a base knock to the gap in left center that allowed Brad Medici to score, giving the Griffs a 6-4 margin.

The insurance run would prove large as Manhattan would get a run in the ninth on a base hit by Chad Salem. But with two outs and a runner at second, Willson secured his seventh save of the year as he got Austin Sheffield to ground out to shortstop.

For Canisius, which pounded out 17 hits in the win, senior Ian Choy went 4-for-5 with four singles, and his base hit back up the middle in the eighth was the 255th hit of his career, which gives him the school's career hit record, which was previously held by former Griff Kevin Mahoney. Junior Sean Jamieson went 3-for-5 with a run scored an a run knocked in, while senior Perry Silverman and junior Brian Burton each posted two hits apiece in the victory. Junior Steve McQuail had one hit in the win for the Griffs, a solo homer to left in the second, that served as the first run of the game.

Van'tWout improved to 5-1 on the year after he tossed two innings where he allowed a run, which was unearned on two hits to go with two strikeouts. Willson's save was the 11th of his career, which ties him with former Griff hurler Ryan McGorman for the program's career lead in that category.
