The
Canisius College baseball team ended its 2010 regular season with an 11-4
victory at Niagara at Sal Maglie Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Golden
Griffins take the series from the Purple Eagles and are now 37-19 overall and
19-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Junior
Sean Jamieson was 3-for-5 with two
RBI while junior Steve McQuail went
2-for-3. Sophomore Drew Pettit
scored two runs while senior Chris Cox
earned the win by allowing one run and striking out five in five innings of
work.
The
Griffs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, scoring two runs in the top of the
first and second innings. McQuail had an RBI double in the first and Ian Choy eventually scored on a
throwing error. Senior Perry Silverman
had an RBI double and Jamieson had an RBI single in the second.
The
Griffs added a run in the fourth on an RBI double from Jamieson. The Purple
Eagles (17-36, 13-11) would make it a 5-3 game when Adam Wagner had a two-RBI
double off redshirt senior Andrew
Van'tWout in the sixth.
Canisius
broke the game open with a six-run ninth inning, scoring the six runs on just
two hits. Choy and McQuail were each hit by a pitch to start the inning and Brian Burton had an RBI single to score
pinch runner Aaron Barley. Sophomore
Brad Medici then had a two-RBI
single to score McQuail and Burton. Shayne
Willson and Medici eventually scored on a Niagara error while Drew Pettit would score on a wild
pitch.
Cox
improves to 5-3 on the season while Willson allowed one run in two innings of
relief to earn his fifth save of the season.
Canisius,
the 2010 MAAC regular-season champions, opens play in the MAAC Championship on
Wednesday at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y. The opponent and game time will
be announced later this weekend. If Rider defeats Iona on Saturday, Canisius will face Manhattan in the first round. If Rider loses to Iona on Saturday, Canisius will face Rider in the first round.
Game Notes: The 37 wins are the second-most in program history, four behind the program record of 41 wins from the 2008 season... McQuail
now has 86 hits on the season, tying Kevin Mailloux's program record of 86 from
last season... Canisius takes the series from Niagara for the fourth consecutive
season and has won 13 of the last 16 meetings between the team... Eight of the
nine Canisius starting position players scored a run on the day... Van'tWout's
two innings pitched are the most since he threw two at Buffalo on April 20...
Willson has thrown two innings in each of his last three outings... McQuail
finishes the regular season hitting .413 overall, .505 in MAAC play and on a 13-game
hitting streak.
