Fairfield Ends Season for Men's Basketball

ALBANY, N.Y. - Fairfield freshman Derek Needham scored a game-high 29 points and senior forward Anthony Johnson added 16 points and seven rebounds as the second-seeded Stags ended Canisius College's men's basketball season with a 67-57 win in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 Citizens Bank MAAC Basketball Championship in the Times Union Center. Fairfield (21-9) advances to the semifinal round of the conference's postseason event, while the Golden Griffins see their season end at 15-17.

Fairfield took a 35-14 lead into the locker room at halftime after the Stags shot 43.8 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from 3-point range in the game's first 20 minutes while holding Canisius to just 22.2 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from long range in the opening stanza. The Blue and Gold led by five at 9-4 after junior forward Greg Logins nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing 4:47 into the contest. From there, the Stags outscored the Griffs 31-5 to close out the half, with Needham and Johnson combining to score 20 of the Stags' first 35 points.

"I thought we didn't play a very solid first half of basketball and I'm still trying to figure out why we didn't come out and play better from the start," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "We challenged the group, and more importantly Frank challenged his teammates, at halftime and I thought we really had them on the ropes there in the second half. We came up a little short, but I'm proud of my team because they showed resolve all year. The 15 wins are a sign that we're moving in the right direction."

In the opening moments of the second half, Fairfield stretched its hold to as many as 21 points on a baseline jumper by Johnson, but the Griffs began to cut into Fairfield's hold as Logins and senior guard Frank Turner teamed up to score Canisius' next 17 points to make the score 39-33 in favor of Fairfield with 12:49 left in regulation time. Needham hit a 3-pointer on Fairfield's next trip down the floor to give the Stags some breathing room at 42-33.

The Griffs made one more run at the Stags and trailed by seven with 5:13 left in the game after Turner cut through the lane to lay one over the front of the rim to make the score 50-43. That basket would be the last in Turner's career however, as the Atlantic City, N.J. native was ejected from the game after being charged with a  deadball, technical flagrant foul on the ensuing in-bounds. As Turner went to guard  Needham in the defensive backcourt, Turner hit Needham, causing the freshman to take a knee, where the officials blew the whistle to stop play. After reviewing the contact on the sideline monitor, the officiating crew charged Turner with the technical flagrant foul, and by rule, the senior was ejected from the game.

"As I turned around, Needham was going the opposite way and I reached toward him and I hit him wherever," Turner said. "When he went down, I tried to help him up. He knows it wasn't intentional. I told the ref it wasn't intentional, but unfortunately I still got ejected."

Turner ended the night with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in the losing effort, while Logins posted his second-straight double-double with a team-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. The Griffs shot 57.1 percent from the field in the second half, while knocking down 44.4 percent of their shots from 3-point range. Junior Robert Goldsberry was credited with eight points, while juniors Elton Frazier and Tomas Vazquez-Simmons chipped in six points apiece.

Turner closed out his career in Blue and Gold ranked among the top-10 in 12 different statistical categories. The school's all-time leader in career games played with 125, Turner ranks fourth in career scoring with 1,769 career points and his 616 career assists is tops in program history.

Game Notes: Canisius' 15 win are the most for the program since 2000-01... The Griffs saw their season end in the MAAC Tournament quarterfinal round for the sixth-straight year... This marked the fourth time Canisius and Fairfield met in the MAAC Tournament, and the series is now tied at 2-2... Turner ends his career averaging 13.9 points per game in eight MAAC Tournament contests.
