Men's Basketball Defeats Marist to Advance to the Quarters

ALBANY, N.Y. – Making 10 3-pointers and getting at least six points from seven players, the Cansius College men's basketball team defeated No. 10 seed Marist 72-54 at the 2010 Citizens Bank MAAC Championship in the Times Union Center on Friday night.

The Golden Griffins (15-16) advance to the quarterfinal round and will take on No. 2 seed Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night. In Buffalo, the game will be available on Channel 87 on Time Warner. The game can also be seen on Fox Sports Atlantic.

Junior Elton Frazier had a team-high 17 points while junior Greg Logins had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Alshwan Hymes had 11 points, including 3-for-7 shooting from behind the arc as Canisius was 10-for-25 as a team on 3-pointers.

“We played a team tonight that had nothing to lose, and we answered that challenge,” Canisius coach Tom Parrotta said. “A number of players gave us good contributions and I felt we did a good job adjusting to what Marist gave us.”

The Griffs shot 18 3-pointers in the first half, making seven of them to hold an eight-point halftime lead. Canisius made two of its first three 3-pointers with the first five shot attempts coming from behind the arc. After Marist took an early 4-3 lead, the Griffs scored eight straight points, capped by a Frank Turner 3-pointer to go up 11-4.

Marist (1-29) responded and cut the Canisius lead to 14-13 by scoring seven straight points, ending with a 3-pointer from R.J. Hall. Marist eventually took an 18-17 lead on a jumper from Rob Johnson. The Griffs then scored 12 consecutive points, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Hymes and Julius Coles to go up 29-18. Hymes hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half to send Canisius into the locker room with a 34-26 lead.

Canisius showed a renewed emphasis on establishing its inside presence early in the second half, grabbing five offensive rebounds in the first six minutes. The Griffs scored their first seven baskets of the second half inside the arc after making just four two-point field goals in the opening 20 minutes. After two free throws from Frazier and a 3-pointer from Tomas Vazquez-Simmons put Canisius up 52-37, the Griffs never allowed Marist to get within single digits the rest of the way.
