The Canisius College baseball team scored four runs in the final two innings and hung on for a 9-8 victory over Dayton at Time Warner Cable Stadium on Sunday. The Golden Griffins end the weekend with an 11-7 record.
Five Golden Griffins had two hits on the day with Sean Jamieson and Ian Choy also scoring two runs. Shayne Willson was 1-for-4 with three RBI and also got the final three outs of the game to record his second save of the season. Senior Mike Goemans went 6.1 innings for the Griffs, allowing six runs, two earned while striking out four.
The Griffs jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two-out, two-RBI doubles from Willson (in the first) and Pettit (in the third). Canisius pushed the lead to five runs in the fourth when Josh Lewycykj and Will Chomicki led off with singles. Perry Silverman was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out and Chomicki came around to score on a RBI groundout from Choy.
The Flyers (8-10) scored the next seven runs, with four of the runs being unearned on three Canisius errors, to take a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
The Griffs took the lead for good with a three-run eighth inning, taking advantage of Dayton's second error of the day. Silverman reached on a one-out error, Jamieson singled and Choy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Junior Steve McQuail singled to left to tie the game at 7-7. Willson's RBI groundout would score pinch runner Aaron Barley to make it 8-7. The Griffs added an insurance run on an RBI single from Jamieson in the top of the ninth.
After the first two batters reached off senior Andrew Van'tWout (3-0) in the top of the ninth, Willson came into the game and after hitting the first batter he faced to load the bases, retired the final three batters to close out the game.
Canisius starts a six-game homestand on Tuesday, taking on Buffalo in the home opener. First pitch at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 3 p.m.
