Baseball Falls Behind Early, Rally Comes Up Short

Dayton jumped out to a 10-3 lead and held off a late charge from the Canisius College baseball team as the Golden Griffins lost 12-9 in the second game of the weekend series at Time Warner Cable Stadium in Dayton, Ohio. The Golden Griffins have dropped two straight and are now 10-7 on the season.

Canisius got on the board in the top of the first for the second straight day, as a one-out RBI single from Steve McQuail put the Griffs up early. Dayton responded with four runs in the bottom of the first as Aaron Dunsmore had a two-RBI double and Cole Tyrell followed with a two-run home run to make it 4-1.

The Griffs responded with two runs in the top of the second. Shayne Willson reached with a one-out single, Will Chomicki was hit by a pitch and the duo advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Freshman Josh Lewyckyj scored Willson on a RBI groundout while Chomicki scored on an RBI single from Perry Silverman to make it 4-3.

The Flyers then scored six straight runs to break open the game and make it 10-3. Jonathan Castine had a three-run homer in the third as Dayton scored in four consecutive innings.

The Griffs scored six runs in the sixth through eighth innings with Drew Pettit scoring on a double play grounder in the sixth and Chomicki coming around to score on a double from Lewyckyj to make it 10-5.

After Dayton pushed the lead back to seven runs with a two-run bottom of the sixth, the Griffs plated three runs in the top of the seventh Ð getting an RBI double from Pettit and two-RBI double from Paul Panik. The Griffs added another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Sean Jamieson but could get no closer.

Redshirt freshman Billy Martin (1-3) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing nine runs, eight earned, in 3.1 innings. Junior Josh Marshall threw the remaining 4.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned.

Canisius and Dayton finish the three-game series on Sunday, with the nine-inning game scheduled for a first pitch of 12 p.m.
