Solid Bullpen Outings and Choy?s HR Lead to Split at Winthrop

The Canisius College baseball team continued to get solid production from its bullpen and won in the last at-bat for the second consecutive day to earn a split on the second day of the Johnny Gill Memorial at Winthrop University on Saturday. Canisius lost the first game 3-2 to Winthrop and rebounded to win the second game 10-9 against Toledo. Canisius is now 9-5 on the 2010 season.

Junior Steve McQuail led Canisius with five RBIs on the day, including two home runs in the first game. Senior Ian Choy also had three hits, including the game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth inning in the second game. A trio of Canisius relievers — Ryan Fennell, Andrew Van'tWout and Josh Marshall — combined to throw 5.2 scoreless innings of relief on the day.

In the second game of the day, after Toledo (6-6) scored in the top of the first, Canisius tied the game when Choy came around to score on an error. The Rockets scored twice in the second and fourth innings to go up 5-1.

Canisius took its first lead of the game with a six-run fifth inning. Perry Silverman had an RBI double that scored Drew Pettit. After Sean Jamieson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Choy singled to center to advance each runner 90 feet, scoring Josh Lewyckyj. After Shayne Willson struck out, McQuail had a two-RBI single to left to tie the game at 5-5. A sacrifice fly from Brad Medici scored Choy and McQuail scored on a double steal with Jarred Flock to make the score 7-5.

The Rockets responded with a four-run sixth inning, as the first five batters reached off Canisius starter Mike Goemans.  A two-out, two-RBI single from Aaron Dudley capped the rally and put Toledo ahead 9-7. The Griffs came right back with a bases-loaded walk to McQuail in the bottom of the sixth cutting the Toledo lead in half to make the score 9-8.

In the eighth, Silverman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and after Jamieson popped out, Choy hit a one-out homer to right to give Canisius the 10-9 lead.

Van'tWout (2-0) retired all six batters he faced on the day, striking out four and struck out the side in the ninth to earn his second victory of the season.

In the first game of the day, Winthrop (9-4) took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI single from Tyler McBride. The Griffs responded in the top of the sixth when McQuail led off the inning with a solo homer to left. The Eagles retook the lead in the seventh when Matt Thielpape and Chris Crane led off the inning with back-to-back homers. McQuail cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth with his second homer of the day, a leadoff homer to right center. The Griffs got a runner to second in the eighth and the leadoff man on base in the ninth, but couldn't score the game-tying run.

Redshirt freshman Billy Martin (1-2) took the loss by allowing three runs in 6.1 innings. Marshall threw a scoreless 1.2 innings of relief.

Canisius concludes play in the Johnny Gill Memorial on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins face Winthrop at 1 p.m.

Notes: Canisius now has three wins in its final at-bat… During the past eight games, the Canisius bullpen has allowed two earned runs during a span of 22 innings pitched… Choy and Silverman have reached base in all 14 games in 2010… Canisius has scored three runs or more in 14 innings on the season, averaging exactly one such inning per game.
