Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Long Island

Canisius College freshman Billy Martin threw six shutout innings in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader against Long Island as the Golden Griffins earned a split with a 3-0 victory over the Blackbirds. Canisius dropped the first game 8-3 and is now 5-2 on the season.

The Griffs took advantage of an extra out in the second inning in the second game. After Brian Burton reached on an error, Jarred Flock replaced him at first on a fielder's choice. Flock stole second and after Steve McQuail drew a walk, the two each moved up 90 feet on stolen bases. Brad Medici brought Flock home on an RBI grounder to short.

The Griffs scored two more in the third when freshman Aaron Barley reached on a one-out single, stole second and third and scored on an RBI single from Sean Jamieson. A single from Ian Choy and walk to Burton loaded the bases. Flock's grounder scored Jamieson to put Canisius up 3-0.

That would be all the run support Martin needed as the righty went six shutout innings, allowing five hits, walking two and striking out eight to earn his first collegiate win. Junior Josh Marshall pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

Long Island scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning in the opener on just two hits and never looked back. The Griffs responded with two runs on one hit in the top of the second, taking advantage of two Long Island errors. Shayne Willson reached on an error and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Flock would then reach on a single, steal second, move to third on an error and score on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.

Long Island scored its fifth run in the bottom of the fifth when Drew Pettit committed a throwing error, his second of the game that would have been the third out of the inning.

Canisius added a run in the sixth when Perry Silverman led off with a single and scored on a double from Jamieson, but the Griffs couldn't get anyone else on base after the first two batters reached. Long Island pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Mike Goemans (0-1) allowed five runs, two earned, on four hits while walking three in 4.1 innings of work. Chris Cox allowed three runs in his 1.2 innings of relief.

Canisius and Long Island wrap up the four-game series on Sunday, with a single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Notes: Canisius is 5-2 through five games, its best start since a 6-1 start to the 2008 season… Marshall's save was the second of his career as he earned a save against Marist on April 13, 2008… Jamieson has at least one hit in all seven of his games as a Golden Griffin… Barley made his first career start in the second game of the doubleheader, batting leadoff and playing right field… Mike Deuschle made his first career start in the second game, batting ninth and starting at second base… Canisius had nine steals in the second game of the day, including three each for Jamieson and Flock.
