Four Canisius scorers posted double figures, led by junior
forward Greg Logins and his season-high 20, as the Golden Griffins defeated
Iona 77-65 Monday night in the Koessler Athletic Center. The win improves
Canisius to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Gaels slipped to 9-6
on the year and 1-3 in conference action.
Canisius, which was without second-leading scorer Julius
Coles because of an illness, shot a blistering 48.8 percent from the field and
a season-best 47.8 percent from behind the arc in the victory and ended the
night with a 38-26 advantage on the boards. Logins scored his 20 points after
he went 7-for-12 from the field, 2-for-6 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 from
the charity stripe, while senior Frank Turner chipped in 18 points, seven
assists, four rebounds and two steals in his 100th career start as a
Griff. Turner's seven assists were a game-high and also allowed him to move
past former Griff Brian Dux for second on the school's career assist list.
Senior Bob Bevilacqua scored a season-high 12 points off the
bench for the Griffs in the victory, while junior Elton Frazier added 11 points
and eight rebounds. Tomas Vazquez-Simmons pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds
for Canisius, which saw eight of nine players score at least one point.
Iona took an early 14-7 lead 4:52 into the contest, but the
Griffs took control of the game with a 21-2 run over 8:28 midway through the
first half, with Logins scoring nine of those 21 points. Bevilacqua got the run
rolling with a pair of free throws and Logins followed moments later with a
3-pointer from the right wing. Sophomore Rokas Gricius knotted the game at
14-14 with 12:32 left in the first half with his first career points as a
Griff.
A Logins lay-up with 10:41 left before the break gave
Canisius the lead for good at 16-14, and a 3-point field goal from Gricius 31
seconds later gave the Griffs' a five-point cushion at 19-14. Canisius took a
10-point lead into the locker room at the half after the Blue and Gold shot 52
percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc in the game's first
20 minutes.
"I thought we were able to keep separation in the second
half because guys really buckled down and made plays when they had to,"
Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "We never stopped being aggressive
offensively and I'm proud of our guys that we were able to be strong on the
glass in the rebounding department and we made our free throws down the
stretch."
Canisius led by as many as 16 in the second half, but Iona
was able to cut into the Griffs' margin to make the score 53-46 with 10:24 left
on the clock. From there, the Griffs scored four-straight points with a pair of
free throws by Frazier and Turner to make the score 57-46 with 9:09 left to
play. In the game's final nine minutes, Canisius went a combined 12-for-16 from
the line to seal the victory.
For Iona, sophomore Scott Machado scored a team-high 17
points, while teammates Kyle Smyth and Jermel Jenkins added 14 and 13 points,
respectively. The Gaels were credited with 11 steals on the night while turning
the ball over just nine times, but the team ended the game shooting 23.3
percent from long range, hitting on seven of 30 tries from behind the 3-point
line.
The Griffs will return to action Saturday, Jan. 9, when the
team starts a four-game MAAC road swing at Marist. Tipoff in Poughkeepsie,
N.Y., is set for 7:30 p.m.
