Hot Shooting First Half Leads Saint Peter?s over Men's Basketball

Visiting Saint Peter's shot 47.4 percent from 3-point range, and the MAAC's top defensive unit held Canisius to 30.4 percent from the field, as the Peacocks took down the Golden Griffins 68-55 Sunday afternoon on Hall of Fame Day in the Koessler Athletic Center.  The win was Saint Peter's fifth straight and improved the team to 12-8 overall and 7-3 in the MAAC, while Canisius slipped to 10-11 overall and 5-5 in league play.

Four Canisius players scored in double figures in the losing effort, led by senior Frank Turner and his game-high 18 points. Junior Elton Frazier was credited with 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss, while fellow junior Greg Logins was credited with a double-double after he came off the bench to score 11 points to go with 10 rebounds. Julius Coles posted 11 points as well for Canisius, which shot 30.4 percent from the field, 25 percent from 3-point range and 69.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Canisius led the game early at 10-9 before Saint Peter's guard Wesley Jenkins knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Peacocks a 12-10 lead with 11:45 left in the first half. Logins answered with a 3-pointer of his own from the left corner on the Griffs' ensuing possession to put the Blue and Gold back up 13-12, but Saint Peter's took the lead for good moments later at 14-13 on a fast-break layup by Steven Samuels.

From there, Saint Peter's pulled away from Canisius, using a 16-6 run over the next 5:45 to take a 30-19 lead with 4:29 left before intermission, capped by a 3-pointer by Samuels. In that scoring spurt, 12 of the Peacocks' 16 points came via the 3-point shot, and SPC took a 36-27 lead into the locker room at the half thanks to shooting 66.7 percent (8-for-12) from 3-point range in the game's first 20 minutes.

"It seemed like we didn't have that energy and bounce, and a lot of it has to do with the way [Saint Peter's] shot the ball in the first half," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "For the most part, the game was a three possession game in the second half, we worked to get it down to seven, get it down to nine, and they'd go and make a tough shot or get a tough offensive rebound. We'll watch this film and move on from here."

In the second half, Canisius was able to knock the Saint Peter's cushion to seven at 41-34 after Frazier drove to the basket and laid one off the glass with 15:29 left in regulation time. The Peacocks answered the Griffs' push however, scoring the game's next six points to regain a 13-point margin at 49-36 with 9:01 left on the clock.

For Saint Peter's, Jeron Belin came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points after he went 5-for-12 from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Wesley Jenkins and Nick Leon posted 11 points for Saint Peter's in the win, while reserve Yvon Raymond chipped in with 10 points to help lift Saint Peter's to its fifth-straight win over the Griffs, dating back to the 2007-08 season.

Turner ended the day with six assists and a game-high five steals for Canisius, which was able to score 17 points off 19 Saint Peter's turnovers. The Peacocks held a 44-34 advantage on the glass, with 18 of those rebounds coming off the offensive glass.

Canisius will return to action Friday, Jan. 29, when the team hosts long-time rival Niagara in the Koessler Athletic Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
