Second-Half Run Pushes Siena Past Men's Basketball

ALBANY, N.Y. — Siena's Clarence Jackson scored all 15 of his points in the second half on five 3-point field goals, and senior guard Edwin Ubiles added a team-high 22 points as the host Saints defeated Canisius 82-70 Monday night in the Times Union Center. Siena improves to 13-4 overall and 6-0 with its seventh-straight win, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Senior Frank Turner led all players with a game-high 23 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 40 minutes. Junior Rishawn Johnson was good for a season-high 13 points off the bench, while Julius Coles chipped in 10 off the bench.

Jackson came alive in the final 20 minutes, as he hit all five of his 3-point field goals in the second stanza. Canisius trailed 54-48 with just under 15 minutes left in regulation time before the Blue and Gold went on a 11-4 run that made the score 59-58 on a 3-pointer from freshman Alshwan Hymes. From there, Jackson made three treys during a span of 3:03 that helped drive a 15-1 Saints run and give Siena a 73-60 lead with less than 8:11 left in the second half. Canisius couldn't cut the Siena lead into single digits the rest of the game.

"Our guys came in here to win against the best team in our league, and if it was not for some very good outside shooting by Siena, we believe the final outcome would have been very different," Canisius head coach Tom Parrotta said. "Our guys continue to improve and battl,e and we know we're going to be a factor in this conference right through the month of March."

For the game, Siena shot 49.2 percent from the field and 52.6 percent from behind the 3-point arc while the Blue and Gold shot 44.4 percent from the field to go with a 38-36 advantage on the glass.

Canisius ended the night as one of five teams in the MAAC with a 3-3 league record as the conference season reaches a a third of the way, with all 10 teams having played six MAAC contests. The Griffs are set to return to action Saturday, when the team plays at Manhattan. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in the Draddy Gymnasium

Game Notes: Siena has now won nine straight in the series and holds a 46-36 advantage all-time against Canisius... Turner's five rebounds allows him to become the first player in school history to score more than 1,500 career points, while collecting more than 500 rebounds and 500 assists... The senior from Atlantic City, N.J. has scored in double figures 85 times in his career, and his 23-point effort Monday was the 15th time in 109 career games where he's posted 20-plus points in a game... Tomas Vazquez-Simmons had 10 rebounds to lead all Canisius players... It marks the fourth time this season and the 11th time in his career where he's been good for 10 or more rebounds in a game... Robert Goldsberry led the Griffs with five assists, giving him 62 on the season, second to Turner's 81.
