Baseball Drops Final Game of the Weekend

Le Moyne Blanks Baseball 5-0

The Canisius College baseball team lost 5-0 to Le Moyne in a non-conference game at the Demske Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Le Moyne scored three runs in the first inning without recording a hit. Canisius starter Benson Merritt walked three of the first four batters to load the bases with one out. Brett Botsford scored on a balk, Matt Nandin scored on a wild pitch and Chris Edmondson scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

The Dolphins added single runs in the third and fifth. Matt Marra had an RBI single in the third to score Edmondson. In the eighth, Edmondson had an RBI single to score Chris Haynes.

The Griffs (12-14) didn't get a runner to third base in the game, advancing a runner to second base in three innings. The Griffs had their best chance in the fourth when Ian Choy was hit by a pitch and Brian Burton walked to put runners at first and second with one out. Le Moyne (7-14) starter Derek Zielinski struck out Steve McQuail and Connor Burke to get out of the inning.

Choy led Canisius by going 2-for-2 and reached base in all four plate appearances. Burton reached base in two of his four plate appearances and recorded the other Canisius hit.

Merritt (0-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks while striking out three in five innings of work. Zielinski (2-1) earned the win for Le Moyne, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out four in five innings.

Canisius returns to the field for a weekend series at Rider. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday, with game time set for 12 p.m.

Game Notes: Choy has raised his average to .351 and is 16-for-32 since March 15... The Griffs were shut out for the first time since April 29, 2007, a 2-0 loss at Iona... Ryan McGorman threw a scoreless 1.2 innings and has an ERA of 3.27 in his last six appearances... Matt Weber allowed one run in his 2.1 innings of relief, his only run allowed in his last 11 innings.
